Seven years after it began and just months after its first movie, The Mandalorian is coming to the end of an era. When it first premiered in 2019, The Mandalorian set the gold standard for Star Wars shows. Though it was the first, The Mandalorian also continued to be one of the franchise's best live-action shows, at least through its first two seasons. It even spawned the "Mandoverse" era of the Star Wars timeline, along with Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett. Most recently, The Mandalorian even spawned its own sequel movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which was chosen to be the first Star Wars movie in seven years since The Rise of Skywalker. It's hard to overstate just how much The Mandalorian has dominated Star Wars in the past seven years. Din Djarin and Grogu are by far the most popular and successful Star Wars characters of the 2020s so far, and The Mandalorian has been in an era of prosperity. That era seems to be coming to an end, however. The Mandalorian season 3 was extremely divisive and widely regarded as the show's worst installment. While The Mandalorian and Grogu got good reviews from audiences, it did poorly with critics and lost millions at the box office. Now, the movie's arrival on Disney+ has confirmed that The Mandalorian is at the end of an era. The Mandalorian and Grogu's Disney+ Premiere Brings The Franchise Full Circle The Mandalorian and Grogu arrived on Disney+ on September 2, and it brought the franchise full-circle. The Mandalorian started off as a Disney+ streaming original series, the first live-action Star Wars show of its kind. It continued being only a streaming show for three seasons, all the while setting the groundwork for other Star Wars shows like Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett through cameo appearances by those titular characters. Then, The Mandalorian became the first streaming show to get a theatrical movie with The Mandalorian and Grogu. Now that The Mandalorian and Grogu has made its streaming premiere, the franchise has come full circle. The Mandalorian started as a standalone streaming show, became a franchise unto itself, spawned a theatrical movie, and has now gone back to streaming. The Mandalorian and Grogu's full-circle moment also confirms that the franchise is at the end of its era of prosperity. For a while, it seemed like The Mandalorian would keep on growing exponentially forever, with more seasons, more spinoffs, and more movies. Now, the entire sub-franchise fits neatly into a collection on Disney+, and there's no news about Din and Grogu's future to be had. Where The Mandalorian Could Show Up Next In Star Wars Via MovieStillsDB Since the era of The Mandalorian dominating Star Wars has come to a close, the sub-franchise's future is in question. The Mandalorian and Grogu's box office failure, coupled with the years-long lack of news about The Mandalorian season 4, doesn't paint a hopeful picture for Din and Grogu's future. The list of upcoming Star Wars movies and shows, as well, doesn't leave much room for the duo to appear. Still, there is some hope for them, as there are a few places they could show up. The most likely place for them to appear is Ahsoka season 2, which is just months away. With Grand Admiral Thrawn threatening the New Republic, and with Din's history of working directly with the government, there's a good chance he would join the fight. Additionally, Dave Filoni's untitled Mandoverse movie may have just entered early stages of production. If that report holds true, Din and Grogu may be back for another movie, this time a proper crossover to put a bow on the entire New Republic era of the Star Wars timeline. It's worth noting that all the most likely places Din and Grogu could return are crossovers or cameos in other characters' stories, like Ahsoka. In all likelihood, they won't get another standalone entry like The Mandalorian and Grogu again for a long time. Nothing is confirmed yet, but Star Wars still has plenty of chances to bring The Mandalorian back. Given how successful Din and Grogu have been in the past, the franchise may just seize those opportunities. While The Mandalorian and Grogu wasn't the hit Disney and Lucasfilm thought it would be, Din and Grogu themselves are still bankable characters. They still drive merchandise sales, and while they may not be trusted with a standalone project anytime soon, The Mandalorian probably isn't going anywhere permanently.
