It's Officially The End Of An Era For Star Wars On Disney+

Sign in to your ScreenRant account Since it launched in 2019, Disney+ has had a steady stream of live-action Star Wars shows (for better or worse). Star Wars’ push into the streaming space got off to a stellar start with the first season of The Mandalorian — it’s no exaggeration to say that, when it arrived on the ass-end of the sequel trilogy, The Mandalorian saved Star Wars — but the franchise has been wildly hit-and-miss since then. Andor was one of the finest TV masterpieces of the 21st century to date — it’s not just the best Star Wars show; it’s one of the best shows, period — and Skeleton Crew’s Goonies-in-space coming-of-age adventure story was an underrated gem. But The Book of Boba Fett was a slog, with hilariously bad action scenes and a depressingly benevolent Boba Fett, and the debut seasons of Ahsoka and The Acolyte were both perfectly whelming, but didn’t go above and beyond. As The Mandalorian continued beyond its natural stopping point, and Obi-Wan Kenobi filled in gaps that didn’t need to be filled in, and even a Rangers of the New Republic series was floated, it seemed as though the slew of Star Wars shows would never stop. We were doomed to see a new Star Wars spinoff pop up on Disney+ every couple of months, with a 50/50 chance as to whether it would be worth checking out. But, mercifully, the Mouse House is finally taking a break to reassess its approach to Star Wars. Ahsoka season 2, which is set to premiere on January 20, 2027, is currently the only upcoming live-action Star Wars show on Disney+, and it could be the last for a while. Star Wars' Future On Disney+ Explained After Ahsoka premieres its second season, the only other Star Wars show in the pipeline at Disney+ is the second season of Maul: Shadow Lord, an animated spinoff that debuted to rave reviews back in April. But after Ahsoka season 2 and Maul: Shadow Lord season 2 both come out in 2027, that’s it. There are no more seasons of The Mandalorian in development, even after the movie left the door open for the adventures to continue, and we’ve seen the last volumes of Star Wars: Visions and the Tales of the... anthologies (although Tales of the Sith would go hard). So, it seems as though Lucasfilm, much like Marvel Studios, is taking a step back from producing streaming content. Both Star Wars and the MCU have gotten inundated with streaming content — so much so that it’s started to feel like homework — so it’s a smart strategy for both franchises to slow down, take stock of what’s working, and start focusing on quality over quantity. Star Wars Is Going Back To The Movies When Star Wars first made the switch to streaming, it seemed like a good fit. The chapter-based episodic storytelling of shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian hark back to the old space opera serials that inspired George Lucas to create Star Wars in the first place. But Star Wars was born on the big screen, and now that streaming content has muddied the waters, it’s going back to the big screen so it can feel more like an event again. The Mandalorian and Grogu was a box office disappointment earlier this year, mainly because it wasn’t a big-screen event; it was just more of that streaming content being dumped into theaters. On May 28, 2027, Disney will get a do-over when it releases the next Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling in a fully original story conceived just for theaters. That’ll be the real test of Star Wars’ remaining appeal to moviegoing audiences.
