Bernthal's best movies and TV shows have seen him take on a variety of roles in a whole host of scenarios, from portraying Shane in the post-apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead to playing the Spartan king Menelaus in The Odyssey. He's also played plenty of characters in more grounded scenarios, such as Braxton Wolff in The Accountant movies and Detective Jack Harper in Netflix's His & Hers. One of his most recent movies saw him take on a small yet crucial role in a unique spy thriller more about intelligence than guns-blazing action. That movie is The Amateur, a 2025 thriller based on Robert Littell's 1981 novel of the same name. The movie stars Rami Malek as Charlie Heller, a CIA cryptographer whose wife is murdered in a terrorist attack. He blackmails the CIA to train him to be an agent, seeking to take revenge for her death using his technological know-how to kill all those involved. Bernthal's The Amateur Is No Longer A Prime Video Top 10 Hit Bernthal portrays Jackson O'Brien, who carries the code name "The Bear," a CIA field operative who's friends with Charlie. The pair make for an engaging duo when onscreen together, which has helped The Amateur become a major success. However, that has since changed following a new update about the movie on its streaming home, Prime Video. According to data from October 28, 2026, The Amateur has been ousted from the streaming service's Top 10. The Amateur is still available to watch on Prime Video internationally, while the film is currently available in the United States for those with an HBO Max subscription. Bernthal's role in the movie is small but important, with The Bear acting as a core CIA connection for Charlie as he attempts to avenge his wife's death. This includes the pair having a crucial conversation that acts as a core part of the movie, which makes his role in the film all the more memorable. The Spy Thriller Has More Than Earned A Modern Sleeper Hit Status Reviews for The Amateur have been relatively positive, scoring a 61% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 198 reviews. Despite a score on the tail end of fresh for critics, the movie has since become a sleeper hit with audiences. The movie holds an 87% on the Popcornmeter based on over 2,500 verified ratings, showcasing just how well-received the film has been for viewers. Malek's leading role harkens back to Mr. Robot while being a unique revenge story starring an unassuming underdog. Because the movie has maintained such vital importance in the eyes of audiences, it's somewhat disheartening that it's no longer on Prime Video's Top 10. However, The Amateur has still left an important mark via the status it used to have, clarifying its popularity amongst audiences in the process. It's what makes it one of the most memorable spy thrillers Malek and Bernthal have starred in, and why it's so significant that it's not on Prime Video's Top 10 anymore.
