It’s Officially The End Of An Era For Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is Infinity Ward’s upcoming shooter game, and thus, the latest Call of Duty game. And, after four titles, Infinity Ward has created something quite special with its rebooted Modern Warfare sub-franchise. Few fans might prefer the newer Modern Warfare games to the classic trilogy, to be fair. That said, there is plenty of reason to be excited for this latest entry, especially with it possibly marking the end of an era for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The official Call of Duty X account shared the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 trailer, highlighting Task Force 141’s globe-trotting exploits. Interestingly, this social media post’s caption also surprisingly informs fans that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign will be an “epic conclusion,” implying that this fourth installment will be the final one in Call of Duty’s latest Modern Warfare series. For a blockbuster series that regularly features A-list acting talent, there could arguably be no better actor to recruit for the conclusion to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s reboot subseries than Death Stranding’s Mads Mikkelsen, whom this trailer reveals. Plus, anyone who is even more enticed by this campaign after hearing that it will be a conclusion of epic proportions may be incentivized now to pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and gain campaign early access as early as October 16 (the full scheduled release being on October 23). While anyone who adores this new Modern Warfare franchise will obviously be upset to hear that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be its swan song, there are many more vocal fans who are elated about what this means for the future of the Call of Duty series overall, such as which other sub-franchises and storylines may receive attention. For all we know, this could merely be the “epic conclusion” to this particular iteration of Modern Warfare, with Infinity Ward then preparing to unveil a new one. Fans like users MishimaJulian and nou_fps agree that Call of Duty: Ghosts deserves a sequel, and would love to see that sub-franchise be the basket where Infinity Ward tosses all its eggs. With Modern Warfare and Black Ops being wholly dominant, it would be fantastic to have fresh (or fresher, at least) blood mixing into that pool, especially if Modern Warfare will soon be taking a bit of a respite. It’s unknown if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be the last Modern Warfare game ever, as this latest reboot only proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that any subseries within the franchise could be rebooted however many years later, for better or worse. Likewise, fans who’ve grown weary of Modern Warfare are almost certainly exhausted by how long Call of Duty’s Black Ops series has gone on for, as well. Only time will tell what the next new Call of Duty game will be, but it’s thrilling to know that one door may be closing for the franchise with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and making way for many others to potentially be opened.
