Originally created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the fantasy adventure franchise helped broaden Nickelodeon's horizon beyond more directly child-friendly fare, with its mix of deeper emotional storytelling, themes and character development garnering consistent praise through the original show's three-season run. Four years after the original Avatar's finale, DiMartino and Konietzko would return with the sequel series The Legend of Korra, which scored generally favorable reviews and has become more of a cult favorite. After a decade hiatus, the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise returned in full force in 2024 with Netflix's live-action remake of the series, which was originally being spearheaded by DiMartino and Konietzko before their departure due to creative differences. On the heels of its second season airing, Paramount also released the long-gestating Avatar Aang film, a sequel to the original series, which was dominating streaming for some time. Avatar: The Last Airbender Is No Longer Dominating Paramount+ It Ends An Impressive Three-Week Streak Co-written by Konietzko, DiMartino and Eric Coleman, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender picked up 13 years after the original show's finale, with Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph working together to establish Republic City, bringing the various bending nations into one harmonious existence. Feeling isolated as the sole remaining airbender, Aang sets off to find a way to restore his kind, leading him to another lost-to-time figure key to bringing back his culture. Having premiered on July 25, following its infamous online leaking, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender was dominating Paramount+'s streaming charts, holding the No. 1 position on the platform for over two weeks, with both original series joining it on the Top 10 TV charts. Now, per FlixPatrol, not only has the 2026 movie officially lost the top spot to André Øvredal's horror-thriller Passenger on the U.S. charts, but neither original TV show sits in the streamer's Top 10 Overall or Top 10 TV charts. Avatar's Streaming Dominance Is Sure To Return At Some Point The Franchise Is Far From Over Though the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise no longer holding top streaming spots on Paramount+ may initially spell doom for some, it's certainly not the first franchise to see ebbs and flows in its popularity. Moreover, Passenger does come with the benefit of having just premiered on Paramount+ on August 20, thus being a fresher release attracting viewers for new things to watch, and Avatar Aang still holds the No. 3 spot on the platform. It's also worth noting that while the new horror-thriller may currently hold the top spot on Paramount+, there's still a very real chance both Avatar Aang and at least one of the prior Last Airbender shows could bounce back in the coming weeks. Unlike the animated sequel film, or its predecessor series, Passenger was not met kindly by critics or audiences, holding 47% and 54% approval ratings from both parties on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas Avatar Aang holds both a 90% "Certified Fresh" score from critics and a near-perfect 99% from audiences. Even if the franchise as a whole doesn't reclaim Top 10 domination in the immediate, Avatar: The Last Airbender is sure to do so at some point in the future, thanks to the multiple projects it has on the horizon. Seven Havens was confirmed for an October 9 premiere, already creating a runway for the fantasy franchise to rocket back up streaming charts, while the prospect of future animated films, and Netflix's own final season of the live-action series, is similarly sure to serve as a boon for it to take back Paramount+'s top honors.
