According to actor Gareth Pierce, that’s exactly what we’re going to get. For the best part of a year, Todd’s everyday life was a waking nightmare thanks to his abusive partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright). Despite seeming like the perfect boyfriend in public, behind closed doors Theo would routinely bully, insult and control Todd, lashing out with terrifying physical violence whenever his uncontrollable jealousy came bubbling to the surface. The list of terrible things Theo did to Todd is too long to name, but the worst include leaving his ex-boyfriend Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) to die in the Corriedale crash, forcing Todd down the aisle in a shotgun wedding and beating him so badly that it resulted in a trip to A & E. Theo tormented Todd for the best part of a year. (Picture: ITV) Even after Todd walked away from their toxic relationship, Theo refused to take no for an answer and a deadly game of cat and mouse ensued when the raging narcissist broke into his flat to exact revenge. This finally brought Theo’s reign of terror to an end, when the monster was pushed off rooftop scaffolding and fell to his death on the Cobbles. A murder investigation began, and he was one of six suspects in the frame along with some of his nearest and dearest friends. Cue weeks of suspicion, paranoia and accusations… Todd was one of the Unusual Suspects. (Picture: ITV) … until the truth finally comes out. The murderer was revealed to be none other than Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien), Todd’s best friend and teenage sweetheart. Needless to say, this comes as a bit of a blow. In desperate need of a break, Todd recently decided to leave the drama of Weatherfield behind for now and jet off to Thailand with friend and fellow murder suspect Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), to visit his mum Eileen and brother Jason. What can Corrie fans expect from Todd once he’s done sunning himself in Bangkok? In a recent chat with Digital Spy, Gareth Pierce – who has portrayed Todd since October 2020 – teased a ‘regeneration’ for the beloved character. “It’s going to be about regeneration now. You don’t want to stand still or feel that you’re in any way defined by a longer storyline that you’ve carried. Now it’s about what comes next, but you don’t want to make it feel like you’re forgetting that story and moving on.’ “But hopefully what we’re going to find out is how Todd navigates this next six months to a year. We’re working to bring some of the humour back in as well. That was a real asset to the character and I love playing comedy too, so we’re bringing that in.’ More happy scenes for Todd in the Rovers, please. (Picture: ITV) “There’ll be some moments that will feel comi-tragic because of the story and the dark relationship that Todd has just come out of. That’s always interesting to me – I do like the grey and a bit of dark comedy. That’s always the type of thing I like to play.” This fresh direction will doubtlessly be welcomed by fans, who fell in love with Todd as a wise-cracking, mischievous and witty rogue who schemed to split up Billy and Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) just so he could get back with his ex. Does this mean that we can expect to see a new romance for Todd in the not-too-distant future? Gareth Pierce is hopeful. “I think so! From a personal perspective, as a guardian and advocate for Todd, then I would love him to have a happier time of it. But I’m also aware that a lot of our big stories are generated by less happy circumstances.’ “I definitely do want to see Todd exploring the dating scene, because I think that’s what we had leading up to the Theo relationship. It was a sense that maybe Todd was getting a little tired of a series of short-term relationships. “Alongside that, he was seeing Billy and Paul going through something that was so, so hard – but also bonding them as a pair. It was really such a symbol of their love and dedication for each other.’ Todd’s last great (healthy) romance was with the Reverend Billy Mayhew. (Picture: ITV) “Because of Todd’s history with Billy and his previous meddling in that relationship, I think that will have made him believe in love and maybe want something like that for himself.’ “It also probably will have made him feel a bit sad about the way his dating life was going in that same period.
