‘It’s a miracle I’m alive’ – Brit racing driver who cheated death in fireball crash breaks silence from hospital bed

BRITISH racing driver Ollie Millroy has broken his silence from his hospital bed and declared: “It’s a miracle I’m alive.” Millroy, 36, is still recovering in China 11 days after his Ferrari erupted into a fireball during a terrifying crash at the Shanghai International Circuit. Millroy said to BBC Sport: “He acted instantly and he did everything right. Watching the video back, it looks like you’re watching a movie and everything’s rehearsed. Sign up for the Sport newsletter Thank you! “He ran around to check on me and realised the fire was too bad, and went round to the passenger side and realised he wasn’t going to get me out of there; got an extinguisher, kept the fire off me for long enough to get inside the car and get me out of it. “Every single step was perfectly executed. If you look at the photos and videos of the car, the fact I’ve got out without life-changing burns or even the fact I’m alive – it’s a miracle.” The Brit also revealed the emotional aftermath of the rescue, with Hartog later talking him through what had happened. Millroy said the pair were left “in floods of tears” as they contemplated how differently the horror smash could have ended. Millroy was competing in the China GT Championship on September 5 when two cars collided before careering into his Ferrari, which immediately burst into flames and then struck the barriers. He was left barely conscious and trapped inside the burning car for more than a minute. The Dutchman managed to keep the fire at bay long enough to get inside the Ferrari and help Millroy escape, with marshals subsequently arriving at the scene. Millroy has said he remembers nothing from around 30 seconds before the crash until approximately an hour afterwards. The Windsor-born racer suffered six broken ribs, a fractured collarbone and injuries to his hand as well as a punctured lung. He has undergone surgery and remains in hospital, admitting that trying to mentally piece together the crash has also proved difficult. Comment now
