An EU naval mission led by Italy inspected a tanker linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” in the Mediterranean on Aug. 2, marking the second such operation in less than two weeks as Europe tightens efforts to enforce oil sanctions against Moscow. Italian forces inspected the ship to verify whether its new flag and registration documents were legitimate. The operation was carried out by EUNAVFOR MED Irini, an EU naval mission, with support from a Greek vessel and a Polish maritime patrol aircraft. The inspection lasted about two hours and ended without incident. The tanker was not seized because the mission does not have authority to detain vessels during such inspections. However, documents collected during the boarding could be used by national authorities for possible future action. The boarding came after the tanker’s captain initially refused to cooperate, prompting Italian military personnel to board the ship from a helicopter launched by the Italian Navy’s flagship, the Thaon di Revel. The operation follows a similar inspection on July 20 of the MV South Star, another tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet.
