It was the perfect date – until I told him how I felt

One moment, we were admiring the view and the next, he was looking at me intently (Picture: Shutterstock / F8 studio) It was a few days before Valentine’s Day. The candles were flickering, the wine glasses were empty, and my date, Nico, and I were pressed up against the kitchen counter, making out. We’d been texting back and forth for a year, and it all seemed to have come to a head at this moment. Hours later, as I saw Nico to my front door, I finally said what I’d been wanting to say all evening. ‘I need to tell you something: I have feelings for you.’ When he paused, my heart sank. ‘Let’s talk about it in the morning,’ he replied. Safe to say, it was not the ending I had planned for this particular date. Nico and I met in 2025, when he came to view the en-suite that had become available in my three-bed flatshare. I joked that I was a realtor (Picture: Getty Images/Maskot) I’d put up an ad on SpareRoom, and the criteria was simple: we were looking for someone extroverted and friendly. His profile caught my attention because he seemed so warm and friendly, but when he turned up, I didn’t expect him to be so attractive and quick-witted. I joked that I was a realtor, given the number of back-to-back viewings I had done that evening. He played along with my salesy pitch about the amenities, and the banter between us got a bit flirty, so naturally the viewing ran over. We hugged goodbye, and I told him I’d message him soon. After I admitted my slight crush on Nico, my flatmate and I decided to go for a more neutral choice – but Nico and I stayed in touch. His secret brownie recipe became the catalyst for a lot of flirting (Picture: Getty Images) We texted every now and again, but I thought nothing of it until I invited him to my supper-club-style dinner party on a whim last summer. He did more than show up; he made brownies for dessert and helped me host throughout the night, which left me and my friends seriously impressed. From that night onwards, we made plans to hang out and started texting more frequently. We could talk about anything, from his travel photography to him teasing me for my questionable Spanish. His secret brownie recipe became the catalyst for a lot of flirting. He insisted I had to earn the recipe, and I told him I would be plotting and scheming until I got it out of him. He said he welcomed the challenge. A month before our date, we sat and listened to music at his place – and I realised I was nervous at the thought of our knees brushing. That’s when I knew I’d caught feelings. The tension was palpable; the way we were leaning into each other was the kind of chemistry I’d rarely experienced. I was nervous at the thought of our knees brushing (Picture: Getty Images) And so I decided to invite him round for dinner as an excuse to find out whether there was a genuine connection beneath all the flirty banter we’d exchanged over text for the past few months. It ended up being the most romantic date I’d ever been on – except for the way it ended. We enjoyed a gorgeous Mediterranean spread. We poked fun at each other; he told me about his childhood. It was our usual sort of chat – except for the way he was looking at me. One moment, we were admiring the view from the balcony; and the next, he was looking at me intently. Taking me by the hand, he pulled me in, and we kissed. I wanted to tell him how I felt without ruining the moment, but before I could say anything, he grabbed my waist and pulled me even closer. ‘Shall we go to my room?’ I said, and led the way. I decided my confession could wait five more minutes. So, How Did It Go? I didn’t want to cut things short, but we both had work in the morning, so I saw him out. That’s when he said we should talk about my feelings for him in the morning. As he put his jacket on, my mind lingered on those last words. I didn’t hear from Nico in the morning. I wasn’t alarmed by this silence; I knew he cared about me either way, so it gave me time to process what I wanted out of this whole interaction. When he finally messaged a few days later, I had already braced myself for the ‘I’m not looking for a relationship, just something casual’ line – and his text was, indeed, along those lines. I replied, insisting that confessing my feelings wasn’t loaded with the expectation of a relationship. I was clinging to the flirty, easy-going version of us we’d left at the dinner table – I’d only wanted some assurance that our conversations were more than those of friends, because I just couldn’t ignore our chemistry. But our closeness dwindled. The following weekend, I spontaneously invited him over to mine. I distracted myself with other plans while miserably checking my phone every two minutes (Picture: Getty Images) He came over, but something was different. I could tell something was on his mind; he knew I was falling for him. We didn’t hook up that time and I barely heard from him after that night, so I distracted myself with other plans while miserably checking my phone every two minutes. About a month later, I got a message from Nico saying we shouldn’t see each other anymore because we wanted different things, and that he couldn’t give me what I deserved. It stung a little at first, because we’d been fine until we kissed. The more physically intimate we became, the less I understood his feelings for me. But mostly, I just missed him as a friend. Now, when I look back, I don’t feel bad or angry. Ultimately, the whole encounter taught me that good chemistry is not the same as compatibility or emotional readiness. I’m just glad I stayed true to myself and wore my heart on my sleeve. Do you have a story you’d like to share? Get in touch by emailing jess.austin@metro.co.uk.
