Isro's new engine passes big test, paves way for heavier LVM3 launches

( Photo- ISRO)Isro successfully tested its semi-cryogenic engine powerhead at full thrust for the first time, marking a major milestone in the development of the propulsion system that will eventually boost the payload capacity of India’s LVM3 rocket.The Indian Space Research Organisation conducted the hot test of the Semi-Cryogenic Engine Power Head Test Article (PHTA) at the Isro Propulsion Research Complex (IPRC) in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu, on September 5, 2026.The PHTA encompasses all major engine systems except the thrust chamber and is being used to validate the performance of the semi-cryogenic propulsion system ahead of integrated engine testing. More importantly, it was the first time the test article was operated at its full 200-tonne thrust level, equivalent to 100% thrust. Earlier tests had successfully demonstrated operation at 47% thrust (94 tonnes), 60% (120 tonnes), and 88% (175 tonnes).According to Isro, the latest test proceeded as predicted, with all engine parameters performing as expected. The test lasted 35 seconds, including a five-second operation of the engine powerhead at the full 200-tonne thrust level.The test also validated another critical capability, the switch-over of propellant supply from a low-pressure start tank to a medium-pressure run tank. This is an important step towards enabling longer-duration PHTA hot tests in subsequent trials.The semi-cryogenic propulsion system is being developed as part of Isro's efforts to upgrade the LVM3, India's heavy-lift launch vehicle.The Semi-Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, or SC120, will be powered by the 2000 kN-class SE2000 engine and is being developed to replace the existing L110 core stage of the LVM3.The new stage is expected to significantly enhance the launch vehicle's performance.
