Israel bombs Lebanon after agreeing to extend 'ceasefire'

16 May, 2026 Last Update16 May, 2026 09:57 AM Israel continued to attack southern Lebanon on Saturday despite the two countries agreeing to extend the "ceasefire" for 45 days just hours earlier. At least six people were killed, including three paramedics, and 22 were wounded in an Israeli strike on a civil defence center in the town of Harouf, the country's state news agency said early Saturday. Israel has been bombarding the south of the country on a daily basis in violation of the 16 April ceasefire. The countries agreed to extend the truce on Friday following two days of talks in Washington, which US and Israeli officials are using to pressure Beirut to forcibly disarm Hezbollah. The truce "will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress," State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said. Hezbollah, which has not been involved in the negotiations, has refused to surrender its weapons and condemned the government's outreach to Israel. Related Articles
