Is the Philippines really the world’s No. 1 source of ocean plastic pollution?

A 2021 study published in Science Advances estimated that the Philippines contributes 356,371 metric tons of plastic to the ocean each year, equivalent to 36% of global riverine plastic emissions from 4,820 rivers. The estimate has since been widely cited in claims that the Philippines is the world’s No. 1 source of ocean plastic pollution.
