Anyone else minding their own business over the weekend, stumble upon Sterling Point, watch every single episode in a row, and then immediately start researching vacation cottages in Canada? Great, glad we all share a brain! Not only is the new Amazon Prime series excellent, but it’s set in one of the most beautiful locations we’ve seen on television. As lead Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie put it to Toronto Life, “The scenery is insane. It’s just peak Canada, you know? I feel like Muskoka is actually the main character of the show. Everything is so beautiful when you’re surrounded by trees and lakes.”Sterling Point follows Annie Jacobson, whose life turns upside down when her estranged grandfather dies and leaves her a plot of land in Canada’s Muskoka Lakes region. She heads there on a mission to get answers, and finds love, friendship, and family she never knew existed—all from the coziest lakeside cottage ever. So, where was the show filmed (you know, for personal itinerary planning purposes)? Is Sterling Point a Real Place? No. However! The Muskoka Lakes region is very real, and the show was shot on location throughout Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph. Spots like Mortimer’s Marina and Sparrow Lake Camp were used throughout filming.Creator Megan Park—who has vacationed in Muskoka since the ’90s—told The Nightly, “We knew we wanted it to be a summer show set in Canada, and cottage life in the summer is a really huge part of Canadian culture. We can really show Muskoka for what it really is, and talk about some of the things that are happening up there affecting the locals and the community.”She added, “People coming in and destroying the land because they don’t care about the trees, and building these $50 million mansions and buying properties. We didn’t get to dig into it completely because we only had eight episodes, but it’s something we always about it if get a second season.”Add Cosmopolitan as a preferred source in your Google search results.Use your Google account to add this to your settings.Where Is Gordon’s Cottage and Can You Rent It?Amazon PrimeGordon’s Cottage is a real location, and I did seemingly find it. First, I stumbled on a Facebook post from a Sterling Point’s location manager asking for tips on a “classic, old style Muskoka cottage that, in the story, our main character inherits from a grandfather she never met.” This implies that the show used an actual home instead of a set. There weren’t any vacation rentals that were a match, but a screenshot of Gordon’s cottage almost perfectly matched a photo from a circa 2015 listing about the—WAIT FOR IT—Gordon Bay House, “a rare piece of ‘olde Muskoka,’ lovingly maintained by the same family for almost a century.” The house used to operate as a hotel, and is on Lake Joseph. Aside from a few exterior changes, it looks pretty much the same.In other words, Gordon’s cottage seems to be a privately owned home with a lot of history! So, Where Can You Stay?As the show makes abundantly clear, Muskoka is a place that people vacation a lot. Meaning, there is an abundance of cottages (read: mansions) to rent. Try Jane’s Cottages if you’re in the mood to live out your very own Sterling Point fantasy!
