They say you should never go back to an ex – but is that really true? Ariana Grande seems to think there might be a case for a second chance, after sharing a series of loved-up pictures with her former boyfriend Ricky Alvarez on Instagram. The singer, 33, first started dating Alvarez in April 2015, when he was working as a backup dancer on her Honeymoon Tour. The pair went on to date for just over a year before calling it quits in July 2016. Their relationship even got a mention in Grande’s 2018 hit thank u, next, in which she famously sang: ‘Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh.’But nearly a decade on, it seems the former couple may have found their way back to each other. Grande and Alvarez went Instagram official in August, prompting plenty of speculation about whether an old flame can really become a new romance. They say you should never go back to an ex – but is that really true?Of course, getting back with an ex isn’t always a recipe for disaster. Sometimes, the timing simply wasn’t right the first time around. But how do you know whether you’re genuinely ready to give a relationship another go, or simply looking back on the past through rose-tinted glasses?According to therapist and Celebs Go Dating expert Anna Williamson, rekindling an old romance can work – but there is one important caveat.‘There’s a huge caveat to getting back together with an old flame, but it can work,’ she explains. ‘It’s important to make the distinction between going back to somebody because you’ve both grown, moved forward and are in a place where it will be a healthy decision to be back together as a couple.’ According to therapist and Celebs Go Dating expert Anna Williamson, rekindling an old romance can work – but there is one important caveatIn other words, missing your ex isn’t necessarily a good enough reason to get back together. You need to consider whether anything has actually changed since you were last a couple.‘The key distinction is to not just go back because you’re nostalgic for how things used to feel, which can be a very, very different motivation,’ says Williamson. ‘If you’re in a different place, you’ve grown, you’re perhaps much more aligned, it’s a better time and place, and you’ve addressed anything that went wrong originally, then yes. I think there’s value in revisiting.’Why getting back with an ex can workOne of the biggest advantages of rekindling an old relationship is that you’re not starting entirely from scratch. You already know each other’s personalities, quirks and histories, which can provide a useful foundation for building something new.‘There can be an already established connection,’ says Williamson. ‘You already know each other’s personalities, quirks, history, that kind of thing. There’s familiarity there.’And sometimes, the circumstances that contributed to a break-up in the first place may no longer exist. Perhaps distance got in the way, one or both of you weren’t emotionally ready for a serious relationship, or you simply needed time to grow up and work out what you wanted.‘People do grow, they mature, they change, they learn, and that can be a really good thing for when people do rekindle a romance,’ Williamson explains. It’s important to approach a rekindled relationship as an entirely new chapter, rather than a continuation of the old one, says WilliamsonThat said, familiarity shouldn’t be mistaken for a free pass. Just because you’ve been together before doesn’t mean you can pick up exactly where you left off.In fact, Williamson says it’s important to approach a rekindled relationship as an entirely new chapter, rather than a continuation of the old one.‘The relationship does need to be addressed and viewed as a new chapter, not a continuation of the old one. You do need to start afresh. You cannot expect a different outcome if you’re simply recreating the same relationship and dynamics that existed before.’Her advice? Ask yourself two important questions: ‘What has changed since we were last together, and what do we want the relationship to look like now?’The signs it’s worth giving your ex another chanceSo, how can you tell whether getting back together is likely to work? According to Williamson, there are a few things worth considering before you dive back in.You’ve both taken accountability for what went wrong. Before you start planning date nights, it’s important to understand why the relationship ended in the first place. Have you both acknowledged your part in the break-up? Has a necessary apology been made? More importantly, have you actually addressed the issues that caused you to split? The circumstances have changed. Sometimes a relationship ends because the timing simply isn’t right. Perhaps you lived in different cities, one of you wasn’t emotionally available, or other life circumstances made being together difficult. If those obstacles have genuinely changed, there may be more room for the relationship to flourish this time around. You’ve both grown as individuals. Time apart can give you the opportunity to mature, understand yourself better and work out what you really want from a relationship. If you’ve both done that work, you may find you’re much better suited to each other now than you were before. There’s still chemistry – and compatibility. Attraction is important, of course, but it’s not the only thing that matters. Is there still a spark between you? Do you share the same values and want similar things from life? Crucially, can you have difficult conversations and work through conflict together? You’re both equally invested. Getting back together should be something you both genuinely want, rather than one person doing all the chasing. Are you equally committed to making it work, and are you both coming back for the right reasons? The pitfalls to watch out for when getting back with an exOf course, there are reasons why getting back together with an ex can be a bad idea, too. And one of the biggest traps is what Williamson calls ‘nostalgia goggles’.‘We can have a tendency to romanticise the past,’ she explains. ‘Particularly if we’ve been unhappy and things haven’t been going well in the present.’It’s easy to remember the lovely holidays, the laughter and all the good times you shared, while conveniently forgetting the arguments, disagreements and reasons you broke up in the first place.‘We can often sort of lose sight of, or get love goggles on when it comes to, the arguments or the tougher bits,’ Williamson says.Another potential pitfall is confusing familiarity with compatibility. Just because somebody feels comfortable and you have a shared history doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the right person for you. And, perhaps most importantly, you need to be careful not to fall back into the same unhealthy relationship patterns. Poor communication, emotional unavailability and controlling behaviours shouldn’t be brushed under the carpet simply because you’re excited to be together again. If those issues were present the first time around, they need to be properly addressed before you consider giving things another go.The questions to ask yourself before getting back with your exIf you’re considering rekindling an old romance, Williamson suggests taking a moment to be really honest with yourself about why you want to do it.One of the most important questions to ask is: ‘Am I missing this person in particular, or am I missing having somebody?’It’s a subtle distinction, but an important one. If you’re feeling lonely, going through a difficult period or unhappy with your dating life, the familiarity of an ex can seem particularly appealing. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the person you should be with. You should also ask yourself whether the reasons you broke up have genuinely been resolved, and whether there’s anything else that needs to be addressed before you can move forward together.Ultimately, getting back with an ex isn’t necessarily a mistake. But it does require honesty, self-awareness and a willingness to do things differently. As Williamson’s advice makes clear, the aim shouldn’t be to recreate the relationship you once had, but to build one that works for the people you’ve both become.
