Is House of the Dragon Returning for Season 4?

2 min readAll-out war is still very much ahead for the Targaryens in House of the Dragon. Even if a new villain in season 3 derails some of our most pressing battles to come, the fourth and final season of the Game of Thrones prequel spin-off will wrap up our story for good.“That is very much my plan," showrunner Ryan Condal told Entertainment Weekly in May. “I can't speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes.” House of the Dragon will end after season 4. Then, as I’m sure House of the Dragon will not serve as the final Game of Thrones spin-off you will ever see on your TV, another fire-breathing beast will surely rise to take its place.Ollie Upton/HBOHouse of the Dragon season 4 will conclude the story based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.House of the Dragon adapts sections of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a historical account of the Targaryen family’s reign before Game of Thrones. The TV series follows the Dance of the Dragons, a Targaryen civil war that ends the time of dragons flying over Westeros. When the series eventually returns for season 4, fans will find out how the story ends for Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), Daemon (Matt Smith), Alicent (Olivia Cooke), Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), and the rest of the surviving cast. But as Condal teased, that’s not the end of Westeros’s history should HBO choose to continue beyond season 4.“We do deviate just a little bit in episode 7 from what’s originally in the books and, personally, from a character standpoint, what Ryan and the writers did in terms of that really helped evolve the character storylines from what were in the books,” director Nina Lopez-Corrado told EW. “I know that’s a very controversial thing to say for diehards, but I think some of the storylines that you’re gonna see in 7 that’ll carry on into 8 were really executed strongly.”Theo WhitemanHouse of the Dragon is set to return for season 4 in 2028.While we won’t spoil the identity of who rules over Westeros by the end of the series, there’s still plenty of time for HBO to figure out its next move. Condal confirmed in June that the team is already “far ahead” in the preproduction process and that the first drafts of the scripts are complete. Plus, HBO is also planning a Game of Thrones movie based on Aegon’s Conquest and a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. But House of the Dragon isn’t expected to return for season 4 until 2028, with filming set for early 2027.“It's the fourth season—the end, the final act—in a story we've been waiting to tell for many years,” Condal told Gold Derby. “We're all really excited.”
