Is Emmerdale on tonight? ITV soaps schedule confirmed with weekend surprise

| Freelance Soaps Reporter Published August 28, 2026 11:23am Updated August 28, 2026 12:25pm There’ll be episodes of both ITV soaps tonight (Picture: ITV) Another week, another interruption for the ITV soaps, with both Emmerdale and Coronation Street missing episodes earlier this week. As the age old debate on soap vs sport rages on, the much-hyped ‘soap power hour’ introduced at the start of the year was disrupted again, with episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street missing from their usual spots earlier this week. Due to ITV’s broadcasting of the EFL Carabao Cup match between Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, Tuesday’s (August 25) episodes of both soaps were cut from the schedule. This was particularly jarring for Emmerdale fans, with this week focussing on the devastation caused at Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) and Dawn Taylor’s (Olivia Bromley) ill-fated wedding, which became a spectacular calamity. As Dawn Billy Fletcher’s (Jay Kontzle) escape plan came to a finite end with Dawn discovering the truth of his lies, her return to Joe saw both of them hit with a car as Jimmy King (Nick Miles) was forced to swerve something, crashing into their marquee and losing his own life in the process. Corrie, meanwhile, has focussed on Tim and Sally Metcalfe’s (Joe Duttine and Sally Dynevor) struggles with the deeply traumatised daughter of Tim’s killer cousin, Lucy Parkinson (Anya Dewin) and Sarah Platt’s (Tina O’Brien) dangerous prison predicament. Are Emmerdale and Coronation Street on tonight? DI Ramsden’s motives are still shrouded in mystery (Picture: ITV) We can confirm, however, that both Emmerdale and Coronation Street will air tonight, Friday, August 28. Due to the missing Tuesday episode, there’ll also be an extra episode of each soap, airing on Sunday, August 30. Tonight’s Emmerdale will see DI Ramsden’s (Chelsea Edge) motivations become clearer and Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) struggle to contain her guilt, while Corrie will see Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) consider intervening to help Sarah. Sunday’s episode of Emmerdale will continue to deal with the dramatic fallout of the crash, as the residents of the village try to navigate their new reality after the devastation and loss suffered. Coronation Street, meanwhile, will see the departure of Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) as she bids goodbye to the cobbles and leaves for a new life in Whitby. Soaps future secured Fans have been concerned over what Sky’s acquisition of ITV would mean for the soaps (Picture: Shutterstock/ITV) With the recent acquisition of ITV by Sky, plenty of soap fans nation wide were worried that the takeover could mean the end of their favourite soaps, but their minds have been eased in recent weeks. ‘TV fan favourites are here to stay’, a quote directly from Sky reads. ‘We’ve agreed a long-term content partnership with ITV studios, to secure the future of many of Britain’s most-watched programmes, including Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Love Island, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, This Morning, Lorraine and Loose Women.’ The soap ‘power hour’ has remained a huge ratings grab (Picture: ITV) ITV managing director, Kevin Lygo later confirmed: ‘These shows will continue.’ Kevin further praised the success of ITV’s soap ‘power hour’, which, according to the boss, has now become firmly established with audiences and continues to deliver impressive viewing figures. ‘They’ve embedded now, that block at 8 pm is still always the highest-viewed thing of that day,’ he explained, adding: ‘It’s really important,’ while later declaring: ‘Long may it continue’ in reference to the channel’s flagship soaps.
