Iron Man Debuts Permanent New Power, Stealing Superman's Ultimate Attack

Tony Stark is always improving his Iron Man armor, and his latest suit upgrade gives him a version of Superman's most powerful attack. Here's everything we know about the new power, including why it's a permanent addition to Iron Man lore. Over more than 60 years, Tony Stark has upgraded his Iron Man armor again and again, often constructing dedicated 'buster' suits to take out major threats such as the Hulk, Thor, the King in Black and Fin Fang Foom. However, this time there's no dedicated suit - just a major upgrade that makes Tony much more of a physical threat. Of course, no hero gets an upgrade without a villain pushing them to their limit, and in this case, Tony's new power is based on the tech of a classic enemy. Iron Man's Upgraded Armor Has Superman's Solar Flare In the recent Iron Man #8 - from Joshua Williamson, Carmen Carnero, Joe Caramagna and Nolan Woodard - Iron Man goes up against classic foe Whiplash, aka Anton Vanko. Seemingly defeated, Iron Man reveals that he's upgraded his armor with tech cribbed from old villain the Dreadknight, allowing him to channel the suit's armor directly to the surface in a devastating explosion. The nature of the power draws undeniable parallels to Superman's solar flare, introduced in 2015 by Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr. An advanced form of heat vision, Superman is able to discharge almost all the solar energy stored within his body in a vast explosion. Superman rarely uses the attack, because it leaves him powerless for twenty-four hours as his body recharges. Iron Man's new attack appears to have similar restrictions. Up against Whiplash, Tony diverts his suit's power to its outer shell, blasting the villain off his feet. However, exhausting his power leaves him vulnerable, allowing the original Whiplash Mark Scarlotti - Vanko's unseen partner - to take him down. Notably, Tony's onboard AI warns him that using this new feature has a 90% chance of resulting in personal injury. While Tony beats the odds this time, this weakness is just one of several reasons that this power is likely to stick around. What Makes Iron Man's New Power Different to His One-Off Abilities? In the past, Iron Man has unleashed a variety of one-time abilities, including energy swords, freeze beams and converting his suit into a flying car. However, it's rarer that a new ability is permanently added to his armor. In the case of the new energy blast, that appears to be the case. In the comic, Iron Man's reveals that the ability is based on a recent encounter with the villainous Dreadknight, and has been fully integrated into his armor. Currently, Tony isn't wearing some kind of special suit, but his regular armor. With the explanation of where this power comes from, it's something Tony should be able to include in all his regular Iron Man suits going forward. The creative team also do a good job balancing this new power. While it knocks out Vanko's Whiplash, it isn't some kind of godkiller ability, and with the drain on power and the risk of personal injury, it's something Tony is only ever likely to use when he's desperate. The real test of whether this new ability will stick around is whether future writers include it in their stories, but built into Iron Man's usual suit and with some major downsides to prevent overuse, this ability has everything it needs to become a permanent part of Tony Stark's arsenal - indeed, future creative teams will create a plothole if Iron Man doesn't use his Superman-esque new power in future adventures.
