5 min readSKINCARE IS FULL of trends that garner attention across social media. Some, like dunking your face in Saratoga Spring Water, are often nonsense. But others (see: the current love for K-beauty) are as good as advertised. LED face masks fall somewhere in the middle of these two scenarios. That’s not to say these devices aren’t effective or worth your attention. It’s more that there is a wide variance in quality between different brands and products. There are plenty of LED face masks that I swear by, like the Shark CryoGlow LED Face Mask, which can seriously transform your skin over the span of a couple of months when used consistently. Of course, others are little more than overpriced Halloween masks. To determine which end of this spectrum the new iRestore Laser Face Mask Pro lands, I’ve been using it for over two months, three to four days a week. This is how it performed.ProsFlexible hard-shell fitEight wavelengths, which range from 415 nm to 1072 nmFive modes across red, near-infrared, blue, green, and amber lightManagable 8-10 minute sessionsEasy to use remoteConsNot compatible with all USB-C chargersDoes not come fully charged in boxDesign and Features Whenever I’m sussing out the quality of a new grooming device, be it an LED face mask or electric razor, the first thing I look at is the brand to see if there’s a proven track record of success. IRestore passes this test with flying near-infrared colors. The brand’s Essential Laser Hair Growth System is the best laser hair growth device out there, so it’s shown it can develop quality built around light-based technology.Sean ZuckerSimilar to the Shark CryoGlow LED Face Mask or TheraFace Mask, the Face Mask Pro is a hard-shell design. I prefer this style over the more flexible options, but I also have an impressively average-sized face and head. If you’ve ever had issues finding a hat that fits or sheet masks not fitting properly along the contours of your face, you may want to consider something more flexible like the CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2.Still, hard-shell masks tend to be a bit more durable and limit user placement error, ensuring the light hits your face exactly where it is designed to. The Face Mask Pro also features two intersecting Velcro straps that help you customize the fit to your face.SHOP IRESTORE FACE MASK PRO ON AMAZONThe Face Mask Pro also has every type of light you’d want in an LED mask. There’s red, near-infrared, blue, green, and amber light across eight wavelengths, which range from 415 nm to 1072 nm, depending on what you’re targeting. There are five modes to make the choice simple: Anti-Aging (which features red and infrared light), Clear (blue, red, and infrared), Brighten (green, red, infrared), Restore (green, amber, red, infrared), and All (blue, green, amber, red, infrared). The Anti-Aging mode is designed to smooth fine lines and wrinkles; Clear aims to fight acne; Brighten reduces dark spots; Restore fights redness; All aims for every benefit at once.Effectiveness The most immediate benefit of the Face Mask Pro is how it fits. The straps made it super easy to find a comfortable fit that wasn’t so snug that it left marks on my face or was so loose that I was constantly messing with it. This is unfortunately an issue I run into a lot with LED face masks, especially as so many seem to be primarily focused on fitting a smaller female face.Sean ZuckerI also appreciated that the mask doesn’t rest entirely on the skin, making direct contact only around the eyes. This is great because the most annoying aspect of using an LED face mask is that you need to wipe it down after every use to avoid slapping lingering bacteria onto your face. Bacteria, of course, can cause acne, which is, ironically, one of the best reasons to use an LED face mask.To be clear, you still need to wipe this down after every use. I just felt less pressure to be overly diligent about it, and worried less about it contributing to breakouts. It also helps avoid the mask feeling hot on your face, another common complaint with these devices. The session lengths are pretty standard at 8 to 10 minutes. This isn’t as low as the incredible three-minute option of Dr. Dennis Gross, but also not as time-consuming as the FAQ 202. It’s actually right in line with our best overall LED face Mask, the Shark CryoGlow. For me, the biggest selling point of iRestore’s mask is the sheer volume of light options and skin concerns it tackles. With blue, green, amber, red, and infrared all available, this device can handle any issue you’d want an LED mask to help with.My big three skin concerns are redness, acne, and signs of aging, so I primarily used the All setting to tackle each issue at once. I’ve been using it for over two months, and I’m starting to see real results. My face looks visibly more balanced, pimples have been less frequent, and when they pop up, it seems like they don’t last as long (to be clear, I’ll also switch to an acne face wash and use pimple patches every night when they do arrive). My face looks smoother, as well.Sean ZuckerThere are, naturally, a few drawbacks to this tool. First, it wasn’t charged out of the box. This is no doubt a minor annoyance. But it’s always a bummer when I’m excited to use a new product and have to wait six hours for it to be ready. That’s another negative; it takes between four and six hours to get a full charge. There have definitely been days when I missed my treatment because it was dead, and I didn’t have that long to wait to use it.It took some digging around my apartment to find a charging brick that was compatible with the USB-C cable. While this is a universal charger, when I plugged it into a couple of bricks I had, nothing happened. This seems to be a common quirk of higher-powered LED face masks, which don't always work with every USB charging brick.Final Verdict: Should You Buy the iRestore Face Mask ProDoes the iRestore Laser Face Mask Pro reinvent the wheel when it comes to LED face masks? No, but that’s not really the point. What it does do is offer everything you could want out of one, with enough light options to tackle any skin concern you’re hoping to remedy. At a buck under $800, it’s certainly on the pricier side of these tools, but well worth it if you’re facing multiple skincare issues and want a device that better fits a larger face comfortably.SHOP IRESTORE FACE MASK PRO ON AMAZONOther LED Face Masks We LikeBest Overall LED Face MaskBest Massaging LED Face MaskBest Fitting LED Face MaskMore of Our Favorite SkincareLED Face Masks|How Often to Reapply Sunscreen | Moisturizers for Oily Skin | Moisturizers for Sensitive Skin | Moisturizers With SPF | Moisturizers for Combination Skin | Moisturizers for Dry Skin | Body Lotions | Night Creams | Foot Creams | Eye Creams | Body Washes for Dry Skin | Bar Soaps | Natural Soaps | Biodegradable Soaps | Face Washes | Moisturizing Body Washes | Deodorants | Sunscreen for Working Out | Skincare BrandsSean Zucker is the Grooming and Reviews Editor at Men's Health.
