Iraq’s University of Technology explores academic partnerships in Spain

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s University of Technology conducted high-level academic discussions on Saturday, September 19, 2026, with Spain’s University of Seville and University of Granada, aiming to broaden bilateral research cooperation, facilitate student and faculty exchanges, and launch joint scientific projects. According to an official university statement carried by INA, the institutional visit was led by the President of the University of Technology, Mohsen Nouri Hamza, heading a senior academic delegation as part of the institution’s broader strategy to expand global academic engagement. At the University of Granada, Hamza met with University Rector Pedro Mercado Pacheco to review frameworks for institutional collaboration and advance a draft comprehensive Global Agreement designed to govern future academic and scientific ties. The delegation held additional technical sessions with Irene Pedreira Romero, Director of International Projects and Networks, and Leandro Di Stasi, Director of Internationalization at the International School for Postgraduate Studies. Deliberations centered on establishing joint research initiatives and leveraging opportunities under the European Union’s Erasmus+ program to facilitate bilateral mobility for researchers, instructors, and graduate students, including hosting Iraqi postgraduate candidates in Spanish laboratories to carry out specialized thesis work. The mission to the University of Seville focused on technical and engineering disciplines aligned with national development priorities. Talks concentrated on joint projects in renewable energy, industrial catalysts, advanced materials, structural engineering, and sustainable architectural design. The Iraqi delegation—which included Dean of the College of Architecture Abbas Ali Hamza, Dean of the College of Electromechanical Engineering Ghassan Abdul Hussein Bilal, Materials Engineering faculty member Mohammed Al-Zuhairi, and Electromechanical Engineering faculty member Sundus Samir Jumaa—agreed to establish specialized bilateral research teams aimed at supporting sustainable development through academic innovation.
