Iraq unveils plan for data centers in Baghdad, Basra, and Mosul

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Communications unveiled an ambitious strategic blueprint on Saturday, September 26, 2026, to construct a distributed network of enterprise data centers across Baghdad, Basra, and Mosul, aiming to upgrade national digital infrastructure and localize hosting for global technology conglomerates. In an exclusive statement granted to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the Director General of the General Company for Communications and Informatics, Ali Yassin, confirmed that establishing tier-standard data centers across multiple provinces stands among the ministry’s top executive priorities to accelerate digital transformation. Yassin revealed that the capital city of Baghdad will host three dedicated data centers situated across prime connectivity hubs, specifically at the Al-Sinak telecommunications complex, the Al-Intisar facility, and the Al-Mamoun Telecommunications Tower compound adjacent to the ministry’s headquarters. The geographical distribution within the capital ensures redundant network routing, continuous uptime, and high-speed fiber interconnection to support both federal e-governance platforms and commercial cloud services. Beyond Baghdad, the national strategy targets key regional logistics and transit corridors, including a specialized facility planned in Basra Governorate in close proximity to the international submarine cable landing station, directly capitalizing on Iraq’s high-capacity maritime fiber-optic gateways. Additionally, the ministry is preparing to establish another facility in Mosul to anchor cloud architecture across the northern provinces. Yassin emphasized that these specialized data centers are purpose-built to attract major multinational technology companies, creating localized environments capable of hosting global content, accelerating low-latency data delivery, and reinforcing Iraq’s sovereign digital ecosystem.
