Iraq to launch ferry routes to Iran, Kuwait, UAE, and Saudi Arabia

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq is preparing to launch a network of regular maritime passenger routes connecting the country with Iran, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, as part of a broader effort to revive the country’s maritime transport sector and strengthen regional tourism. According to Iraq’s Ministry of Transport, the initiative will begin after technical and administrative requirements are completed in coordination with relevant authorities inside Iraq and neighboring countries. A source at the ministry’s media office told Iraq’s official newspaper that the government has developed a comprehensive plan to operate regional maritime transport services using an expanded fleet of boats and ferries. The ministry currently operates 40 boats and ferries under its river transport program and has recently added 15 new boats and three ferries to the fleet. The upgraded vessels are expected to provide modern, safe transportation for passengers while supporting Iraq’s growing tourism sector. According to the ministry, most of the new vessels will be deployed on passenger and tourism routes linking Iraq with Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Officials said services will begin once all operational approvals, safety procedures, and cross-border coordination have been finalized to ensure the routes meet international maritime safety standards. The planned connections are expected to facilitate both tourism and commercial travel between Iraq and neighboring countries. The Ministry of Transport believes the new maritime routes will provide an affordable and practical alternative for regional travel, particularly for leisure tourism. The project is also expected to improve mobility for official delegations and religious visitors while strengthening economic ties with Gulf states and Iran through enhanced passenger connectivity.
