Iraq restricts airspace as United States calls for Iran border closures

An Iraqi Airways aircraft on the tarmac at Baghdad International Airport. Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq has issued temporary airspace restrictions from November 7 to 11, citing military operations, as Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein warned of rising regional tensions and the potential of fresh violence. According to an aviation notification (NOTAM), the limitations will apply daily between 05:00 and 11:00 UTC, disrupting airplane operations throughout Iraqi airspace, including routes servicing Baghdad, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Kirkuk. The events came as Hussein stated that the US has officially demanded that Iraq block all border crossings with neighboring Iran, save two. Hussein also stated that Iraqi authorities had evidence that foreign parties were exploiting Iraqi territory to conduct assaults on neighboring nations, creating worries about Iraq’s sovereignty and regional security. He also cautioned that present conditions lead to the prospect of further conflict in the area, as Iraq is under growing strain from tensions between Iran and the US. The issue underlines Iraq’s challenging position in the face of regional instability, as the government seeks to safeguard its sovereignty, maintain border security, and avoid becoming a battlefield for larger geopolitical disputes.
