Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — Iraq has received a second shipment of ground support equipment for Nasiriyah International Airport as building progresses, bringing the long-awaited facility closer to becoming operational. The Ministry of Transport stated that the equipment arrived following an initial delivery in June and is part of the airport’s ongoing preparations for its opening. Airport Director Ali Al-Ghurabi stated that the latest shipment includes commercial vehicles and operational equipment required to support aircraft and passenger services once the airport is operational. The equipment will offer the necessary ground handling and technical support capabilities for international airport operations, assisting in the facility’s preparation for commercial flights, he added. The airport is one of several transportation infrastructure projects being developed by Iraq as the government seeks to modernize its aviation sector, improve regional connectivity, and spur economic development beyond the country’s oil industry. Baghdad has increased investment in airports, ports, and trains as part of a larger goal to improve transportation linkages, boost commerce and tourism, and establish Iraq as a regional logistical center linking the Gulf to Europe and Asia.
