Iraq reaches 100,000 LPG converted cars as Parliament urges factory model access

Iraqi Ministry of Oil building Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Gas Filling and Services Company, an operating affiliate of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, announced on Saturday, September 26, 2026, that the cumulative number of vehicles converted to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has reached approximately 100,000 across Iraq. Speaking to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the company’s media director, Mahdi Al-Nouri, confirmed that retrofitted vehicle figures currently range between 98,000 and 100,000 cars, noting an escalating pace of adoption among motorists seeking economical alternatives to conventional liquid fuels. Al-Nouri stated that installation and technical maintenance services are carried out across a nationwide network of 26 specialized workshops operating under the state-owned gas company. The growing consumer uptake reflects heightened public interest in cleaner, subsidized autogas, prompting the Ministry of Oil to scale up workshop throughput and expand fueling station capacity to keep up with escalating demand. Despite this milestone, converted vehicles represent a modest fraction—less than 1.5 percent—of Iraq’s national automobile fleet, which currently totals approximately 7 million registered cars. The autogas initiative has simultaneously sparked parliamentary scrutiny regarding regulatory bottlenecks. Lawmaker Amer Abdul-Jabbar raised the issue on the floor of the Council of Representatives, criticizing the Ministry of Oil for restricting autogas dispensing exclusively to locally converted vehicles while denying fuel to imported cars equipped with factory-installed LPG systems. Abdul-Jabbar called on the federal government to reform existing fuel distribution policies, authorize gas sales for all compatible vehicles, and incentivize the commercial importation of factory-built LPG cars to accelerate emissions reduction and alleviate domestic gasoline consumption.
