The project, which represents a significant infrastructure milestone for the city, aims to improve the city’s environmental health, sanitation, and living standards. The project’s capacity is 100,000 cubic meters per day, processing massive volumes of wastewater before it safely returns to the environment or is reused. The infrastructure initiative will serve around 400,000 residents, drastically reducing public health risks and pollution in the Tigris River basin. The project’s targeted final completion and commissioning window points toward the first half of 2028. The federal government in Baghdad provides direct funding for the project through the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities, and Public Works’ multi-year national infrastructure budget. This financing is part of the state’s strategic initiative to rebuild the country’s dilapidated water and sanitation networks.
