Iran war: 20 claims we've investigated

We've monitored misinformation about the war since its start roughly five months ago. Published July 30, 2026 On Feb. 28, 2026, the U.S. and Israel hit various locations across Iran with airstrikes, including one that killed the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The strikes opened a war between the two nations and Iran. Since then, the war has fluctuated between different intensities — the U.S. and Iran agreed to an interim ceasefire deal in mid-June, only for Trump to declare the ceasefire over a few weeks later, which intensified a strike campaign Trump paused again on July 27 — but has continued in some capacity over the course of the past five months. In that time, Snopes has monitored misinformation and investigated claims people weren't sure were believable. Some of these claims have been true, while others were false, satirical or not possible to confirm.
