IPL to reconsider Impact Player rule after seeking franchises' feedback

The move comes months after BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board would review the controversial rule following IPL 2026.According to a Cricbuzz report, franchises have been asked to submit their views by Monday, August 31, as part of a wider feedback exercise on cricket operations. The BCCI is also seeking inputs on PMOA, umpiring, practice sessions and playing conditions, but the Impact Player rule remains the most significant issue.The rule has been a major talking point in recent IPL seasons, particularly after the 2026 edition produced a significant rise in 200-plus totals and renewed debate over the balance between bat and ball.“As discussed in the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting, it was agreed that feedback would be collected from all franchises at the conclusion of the tournament on key cricket operations matters,” the BCCI said in its communiqu. The board had previously indicated that the Impact Player rule was expected to continue for another season, despite opposition from several captains at the previous meeting.BCCI SEEKS A FRESH VIEWThe BCCI’s latest request marks a formal follow-up to Saikia’s comments earlier this year, when he said the board would be more inclined to reconsider the rule if franchises raised concerns. The Impact Player rule has also attracted criticism from prominent Indian cricketers, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have questioned its effect on the role of bowlers and the balance of T20 cricket.Saikia, however, had defended the rule in May, pointing to the variety of results across the tournament.“Some low-scoring matches are also there. All the fans are enjoying the matches. The bowlers are getting good wickets as well,” he had said.“Everything is happening; it is a full bouquet in one package.”IMPACT PLAYER DEBATE GATHERS STEAMThe latest feedback process could now give the BCCI a clearer picture of how franchises view the rule after another full season of its use.The board has asked teams to discuss the listed issues with their respective cricket operations departments and submit consolidated feedback by August 31.
