Invincible Season 5 Is Sadly Replacing A Fan-Favorite Character

Since its first season, Robert Kirkman's superhero epic has repeatedly demonstrated that no character is guaranteed to remain in the same position forever. As Mark Grayson continues to navigate the complicated Viltrumite conflict, the animated series is approaching the point where a fan-favorite character has to stay in the background, at least for a while. For most of Invincible, Thragg has operated in the shadows, which made his appearance in season 4 even more exciting. The Grand Regent's arrival fundamentally changed the scale of the Viltrumite conflict because he represented the empire's enormous threat. Since season 4 covered the first Viltrumite War, the upcoming season will shift its primary focus away from Thragg, even though his story is just beginning. This doesn't necessarily mean Thragg is disappearing from Invincible. In fact, his importance to the story makes it unlikely. Instead, the series will enter a phase where another character can take over the more immediate antagonist role while Thragg remains an important presence in the background. That might disappoint fans expecting the Viltrumite leader to dominate the next chapter, but another villain will take his place: Dinosaurus. Dinosaurus Will Replace Thragg As Invincible's Main Villain In Season 5 After Omni-Man betrayed his species in earlier seasons of Invincible, several other Viltrumites visited Mark, hoping he would take over his father’s role of preparing Earth for Viltrumite rule. It soon became clear that Conquest and Anissa were simply soldiers following Thragg’s orders. Audiences, however, didn’t get to meet the fearsome Viltrumite warrior until Invincible season 4, and his reputation preceded him. Thragg is obviously too powerful for Mark and the Coalition of Planets to defeat in single combat, so the two sides had to come to a truce. Basically, the remaining members of Thragg’s species will now stay on Earth to repopulate, thereby leaving the role of Invincible’s main villain open. Like Thragg, Dinosaurus was introduced in Invincible season 4, but something about him didn’t scream "main villain." However, Dinosaurus is actually more powerful than he seems. Dinosaurus, scientist David Anders' alter ego, lives by a utilitarian philosophy. He is willing to sacrifice thousands or even millions of people if he believes it will ultimately save more. His "kill millions to save billions" mentality makes him particularly dangerous because he doesn't consider himself evil. Dinosaurus and Invincible also have an interesting relationship that will be crucial to both their storylines in season 4. Beneath the surface, the hero and villain both want to save the world; the difference is that Dinosaurus is willing to cross moral boundaries to do so. After watching a villain as physically overwhelming as Thragg, introducing another character who can punch Mark really hard would risk making season 5's storyline repetitive, which is why Dinosaurus is the perfect villain for the upcoming Invincible installment. Dinosaurus gets under Mark’s skin because they both believe in good. When Mark was fighting Thragg, he understood exactly what he was fighting for. With Dinosaurus, Mark may genuinely wonder whether his enemy has a point. That moral ambiguity makes their eventual conflict considerably more uncomfortable and fascinating. Allen The Alien Could Also Be A Villain When Invincible Returns At the end of Invincible season 4, Allen inherits leadership of the Coalition of Planets after Thaedus' death. More importantly, he discovers Thaedus' enhanced Scourge Virus, which could potentially be used against the remaining Viltrumites. Allen has always been a good guy who wants to protect the people he loves and the rest of the universe, so possessing the deadly virus puts him in an awkward position. On one hand, the Viltrumites have agreed to remain on Earth so long as they don’t harm humanity. On the other hand, the Coalition's leadership believes the Viltrumites need to be eliminated, including Mark and Nolan if necessary. Allen would not suddenly become evil. His potential conflict with Mark will likely come from his willingness to do something horrific because he believes it is necessary to defeat the Viltrumites. Allen was created to eliminate the Viltrumites, so his having the Scourge Virus would make that easier, even if it means taking down Mark, Oliver, and Nolan. Allen has spent much of Invincible as one of Mark's closest allies. He has fought alongside the Coalition, helped rescue Nolan, and had a significant role in the war. Becoming Coalition leader, however, changes his responsibilities. As a friend, Allen can save Mark and his family, but as the leader of an interplanetary alliance, he has to consider billions of lives. That creates a conflict where Allen could ultimately decide that protecting Mark is less important than eliminating the Viltrumite threat. This is particularly significant because Allen's personality has already changed dramatically throughout Invincible. His near-death experience caused his body to become much stronger, eventually allowing him to operate at a level where he can fight Viltrumites. Mark, despite his differences with his father, isn’t just going to lay down and let Allen kill half of his family. If it comes to it, he will have no choice but to take up arms against his friend, since the alternative option means letting his brother and father die. Thragg Will Still Have A Presence In Invincible's Future Seasons While Dinosaurus and other Invincible characters can occupy more immediate antagonist roles, Thragg's importance to the larger Viltrumite storyline gives the series plenty of reasons to keep him present in future seasons. Though the Viltrumite leader and the remaining members of his race are on Earth, his truce with Mark is unlikely to last forever. Mark, Nolan, and the Coalition destroyed Thragg’s home and laid waste to his best soldiers. That is unforgivable for someone as powerful as Thragg. Invincible Season Main Villain 1 Omni-Man 2 Angstrom Levy 3 Cecil Stedman, Conquest 4 Thragg 5 Dinosaurus Prime Video has confirmed that Invincible will have a fifth and sixth season, so Thragg remains a looming threat over Mark and the Coalition. According to the Invincible comics, Thragg will rally his forces against Mark after learning that he and Nolan are the true heirs to the Viltrumite throne. The final battle will see the Viltrumite leader meet his maker, but that is still a long way off. For now, Thragg's presence as he gathers his power and strengthens his army is enough to keep Mark and the Coalition sweating. Invincible has always been about the battle between Mark and the remaining Viltrumites, so it makes sense that Thragg is a villain who cannot be easily vanquished. With Dinosaurus as the primary antagonist in Invincible season 5, Thragg will have plenty of time to prepare for the fight of his life in future Invincible seasons.
