While the Linux 7.3 merge window just wrapped up this weekend, on Monday Intel already sent out their first feature pull request of new Xe kernel graphics driver material that is destined for Linux 7.4. The Intel Xe driver submitted the first pull request to DRM-Next of new feature code to begin queuing for the Linux 7.4 merge window set to happen in late October. One of the big features of this new pull is introducing cold reset recovery support. The cold reset recovery method will be used by the Intel Xe driver for handling errors that require a complete device power cycle to be able to recover. With some errors on Intel graphics hardware, it's possible to leave the GPU in a "persistent hardware error state" where performing a PCIe reset or reloading the kernel driver isn't enough to recover the hardware. With Linux 7.4, DRM_WEDGE_RECOVERY_COLD_RESET is being introduced for performing a cold reset recovery in conjunction with user-space for completely power-cycling the Intel graphics device. Linux 7.4 is also bringing an improvement for Panther Lake Xe3 integrated graphics with now enabling Intelligent Bias Control v3. The IBC v3 algorithm brings Panther Lake specific optimizations found in the newer GuC firmware. Intel IBC v3 should help with power management improvements during gaming and similar workloads for the Panther Lake integrated graphics. Another new feature for Intel Xe in Linux 7.4 is DRM_RAS Netlink error event support. There is also VF migration for multi-queue, parallel page fault handling, and DRM_RAS error thresholds. There are also improvements for debugging PCI errors. More details on these early Intel Xe kernel driver changes planned for Linux 7.4 can be found via this pull request on its way to DRM-Next.
