Instagram takes aim at AI-generated profiles, limits reach of unlabelled accounts

Users who operate AI-generated avatar profiles must update their labels “appropriately” or else the platform will apply limits in those profiles’ reach.“This update builds on the learnings of the AI creator label we began testing earlier this year. As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated. They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person,” Instagram said in a blog. The Meta-owned social media plarform is not the only one rolling out new labelling rules for AI-generated profiles. Spotify is also working to label ‘AI Personas’ from mid-September.The streaming giant remarked that users did not like to be deceived by AI artists.“Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” stated the company.Spotify said it would not include AI Personas in any editorial or algorithmic recommendations. In Instagram’s case, this only applies if the AI profile is unlabelled.
