Instagram Takedowns and AI Deepfakes Target Albania’s ‘Flamingo’ Protesters

Far from isolated incidents, experts say the targeting of social media accounts linked to anti-government protesters in Albania is part of a ‘coordinated pattern’ of censorship. Since the beginning of June, activist and communications expert Alesia Burnazi has turned her Instagram account into an informal reporting platform from Tirana’s Deshmoret e Kombit Boulevard, where protesters gather daily outside the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Armed with a mobile phone and a small lapel microphone, Burnazi began covering the anti-government protests known as the ‘Flamingo Revolution’, seeking to fill, in part, the information vacuum created by the lack of coverage by Albania’s big media outlets.
