Photo: X/DayaBNayak'Life imitates art far more often than art imitates life.’ Oscar Wilde’s timeless words found an almost uncanny echo in the story of Mumbai’s famed encounter specialist and retired cop Daya Nayak and actor Nana Patekar. Nayak was the real-life inspiration for Patekar’s iconic character ‘Sadhu Agashe’ in the 2004 Bollywood film Ab Tak Chappan, yet years later, it was the actor who had portrayed a version of him on screen who became an inspiration to the man behind the character. As veteran actor Nana Patekar’s death brought an end to a remarkable chapter, Nayak’s tribute seemed to blur, almost completely, the fragile line between the reel and the real.Paying tribute to the 75-year-old actor, who passed away on October 8 after suffering chest pain, Nayak wrote on X, “I can’t quite believe you are gone. We spoke just a few days ago, and somehow the thought that that was our last conversation feels impossible to believe.”The character of Sadhu Agashe cast a spell on Indian audiences because Nana Patekar portrayed, with remarkable realism, the grit and struggles of a police officer navigating a city in the grip of the underworld. For Nayak, however, the performance went beyond merely bringing a fictional cop to life. He wrote that Patekar’s extraordinary versatility and the honesty with which he inhabited the character made audiences understand the person behind the khaki uniform– the pressures, the humanity and what it truly means to be a police officer.“Such a wonderfully versatile actor, and the extraordinary way you inhabited every character you played. You inspired me while playing a character inspired by me,’ Nayak wrote. ‘You didn’t simply portray a police officer — you made people understand the person behind the uniform, the pressures, the humanity and what it truly means to be a police officer. And you did it with such honesty and depth,” he wrote. A WARM FRIENDSHIPBeyond the unlikely ways in which they inspired each other, Nayak and Patekar shared a bond that went far beyond the screen — a friendship that endured through the years, right until the actor’s final days.Sharing a video of one of their warm moments, in which Nayak is seen touching his ‘Nana’s’ feet, he remembered the man behind the actor. ‘But beyond the actor was the friend — the Nana I could always count on. Warm, dependable, generous and always there when it mattered. I will miss you terribly. I feel incredibly lucky to have known you, and most of all, to have called you my friend and brother,’ he wrote. Nayak ended his message with a quiet hope of meeting Patekar again someday — leaving behind not just a farewell to an actor he admired, but a goodbye to a friend and brother he cherished.- Ends
