Insomniac’s next game after Wolverine to feature multiple playable characters

X-Men Assemble (Sony Interactive Entertainment) Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games is staffing up for a new title, and it could be connected to a rumoured X-Men game. Marvel’s Wolverine may have not been the critical darling Sony hoped for, but it still seems to have been a hit in terms of sales. The superhero sim was the biggest-selling game of September in the US, and achieved the highest launch month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since 2024’s Helldivers 2. According to Ampere, it’s estimated to have sold around 2.16 million units at launch. It’s a positive sign for the future of developer Insomniac Games and its collaborations with Marvel, and new job listings at the studio may have outed a core feature of a future game. A new job listing for Staff Hero Designer on an ‘upcoming project’ describes the role as being accountable for the ‘delivery of design and execution for one or more playable characters’. This includes ‘core combat and features like traversal, abilities, non-combat mechanics, camera, and more’. The post goes on to mention ‘playable hero characters’ and other variations several times, which suggests Insomniac is cooking up a game where you play as multiple different characters. Of course, Insomniac is no stranger to this. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had two Spider-Men, while Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart oscillated between Ratchet and Rivet (although they both played identically). However, we can make some educated guesses as to what this job post relates to thanks to the studio leak from 2023. At the time, leaked plans revealed Wolverine was slated for autumn 2026, which would be followed by Spider-Man 3 in autumn 2028, a new Ratchet & Clank for autumn 2029, an X-Men game for autumn 2030, and an unspecified new IP in 2031 or 2032. While these plans may have changed over the years (plans for a Venom half-sequel have seemingly disappeared – perhaps in part because of the death of voice actor Tony Todd), there’s still some validity to it, based on the fact Wolverine launched in the window it was supposed to. So what could this job listing relate to? If Spider-Man 3 is set for 2028, it’s likely passed the point where new playable characters can still be thrown into the mix. So that leaves either the next Ratchet & Clank or the X-Men game. There’s a strong chance the next Ratchet & Clank will feature several playable characters, but considering Insomniac has already dabbled with that in the series’ past, the creation of new characters suggests this could be tied to the X-Men title – especially as it specifically refers to traversal and other abilities, with various X-Men able to do everything from run at super speed to fly or teleport. Jean Grey turns up in Marvel’s Wolverine (Sony Interactive Entertainment) Insomniac hasn’t officially said anything about an X-Men game but following the introduction of Mystique, Sabretooth, and Jean Grey in Wolverine, the obvious step would be to flesh out that world with multiple playable X-Men – especially as the team itself, and key characters such as Professor X and Magneto, do not appear in the game. A separate listing for Senior Combat Designer (Enemies/Bosses) may also provide some insight. While it’s unclear if it relates to the same project, it describes the role as being responsible for ‘AI enemies, smaller-scale mini-bosses, and larger boss encounters’. Additionally, another role for Senior Gameplay Programmer emphasises ‘enemy, boss, and ally behaviours’ – which could suggest you’ll be fighting alongside others in combat scenarios, much like how the X-Men are shown to operate. Of course, this could be the grand reintroduction of a playable Captain Qwark in the next Ratchet & Clank, but we’re staying optimistic for a 3D Nightcrawler. Sony’s next major first-party exclusive is set to be God Of War Laufey, which launches on February 16, 2027. Or is it for Ratchet?
