The latest project delivered by Sony’s first-party studio was the not-so-great Marvel’s Wolverine, released exclusively for PlayStation 5 consoles in September. The developers have been working with Marvel IPs for nearly a decade, and following the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequels, it feels like a studio that can be trusted with such franchises, despite how Wolverine came out. Now, according to a new report by Insider Gaming, Insomniac Games may be working with superheroes once again. As seen in the report, a new job listing for an undisclosed project at Insomniac Games has been shared, and according to it, the studio is looking for someone who can design heroes, focusing on the “combat, traversal, and 3Cs (Camera, Character, Controls) for an upcoming project.” What this project is has not been officially revealed through the job listing, but it may be the long-rumored X-Men game that has been leaked over and over again for the past few years. There have been leaks about an X-Men game created by Insomniac Games, and that Marvel’s Wolverine was the foundation for this upcoming project, since he is one of the most iconic characters from the group – and the fact that several other X-Men heroes show up in his titular game. Different from most of its Marvel-related projects so far, however, Insomniac’s rumored X-Men game will likely have more than one playable character, as highlighted by the job listing. According to the listing, the Staff Hero Designer’s responsibilities include creating character systems for “one or more playable characters.” Insider Gaming points out that “characters” is mentioned in the plural four times in the same job listing. The outlet also shares that there are rumors about Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and Marvel’s Venom, both of which will seemingly be created by Insomniac Games, and much like the other titles with a single hero, they’ll be focused on one playable character rather than a plethora of them. The job listing highlights that the developer will need to create “core combat and features like traversal, abilities, non-combat mechanics, camera, and more.” Seeing that this is likely a multi-hero game, it does feel, in parts, like 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers, which let you control a series of iconic heroes – though that game was heavily criticized. Similar approaches have also been taken by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and 2024’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Without more details about the X-Men game, we’re hoping it looks more like Guardians of the Galaxy than the other titles here. Considering that Insomniac’s latest big release has been released, it’s very likely that Sony will soon present what is next to come with the studio, especially if the reports about it having multiple games in the pipeline are true. It’s unclear exactly when the rumored X-Men game will be presented, and considering that Insomniac is still looking for a hero designer, we’ll likely only get a teaser without any major character or gameplay reveals before anything else.
