The film follows Amelia Eve’s character, Gemma, as she is haunted by ghosts from the Further, the dimension that houses the dead. The film marks a change of pace from other titles in the franchise, and in many ways. Out of the Further highlights a new cast of characters, that includes the aforementioned Gemma, Maya, Nick, Claire, and more. The film also includes Elise Rainer, a mainstay in the Insidious franchise, in a supporting role. In that sense, Out of the Further moves beyond the Lamberts, the family that the previous movies followed. With new heroes also comes a new villain, Cyrus Lam. Lam is revealed to have been a cult leader in life, and garnered a devout following from his acolytes. Decades before the events of Out of the Further, Lam ends his own life in a bid to prove to his followers that he can return from the dead, and he looks to Gemma to help him do that. Lam is eventually defeated when Gemma and Elise lock him in the Further for good, thus preventing the villain from coming back into the land of the living. Lam promised to bring back other evil spirits in the Further if they helped him return, and at the end of the film, it’s shown that these spirits aren’t happy with the cult leader for failing to live up to his promise. Insidious: Out of the Further has one post credits scene, and it highlights how Lam is not only locked up in the Further, but is also at the mercy of the other ghosts who he crossed in his attempts to revive himself. Insidious: Out Of The Further's Post-Credits Scene Explained In the final act of Insidious: Out of the Further, Gemma teams up with Elise to try to trap Cyrus Lam. His power is growing stronger as he gets closer to reviving himself, which makes it even harder for the heroes to stop him. As Gemma is in the Further, she realizes that Lam isn’t just targeting her — he’s targeting her daughter, Maya, as well. This increases the stakes of the final battle, as the heroes frantically try to stop Lam from using Maya to come back to life. They are ultimately able to stop him, and Lam is locked behind the infamous red door that has been a consistent presence in the Insidious franchise. All that leads to Out of the Further’s one post-credits scene. In the sequence, which takes place in the mid-credits, Lam is seen tied down to a dentist's office chair. Dentistry is a key theme in the film, as Gemma works as a dental hygienist and even cleans the teeth of one of Lam’s acolytes in the film’s second act. As Lam is tied down, another spirit in the Further acts as his “dentist” in the post-credits scene. The spirit uses a dental tool to drill into the teeth of Lam, who screams in pain. However, that it shows Cyrus Lam once again highlights one other important factor of the film’s ending — the cult leader isn’t gone forever. Therefore, even though he’s tied up and being tortured, it’s still possible for Lam to return in some way. Out of the Further is getting good reviews, and the reaction to Lam as a villain has been positive, so this post-credits scene could hint at a comeback for the character at some point in the future. Beyond that, the focus on other characters besides the Lamberts also shows the direction of the Insidious franchise moving forward. Although they were the main heroes for the first several Insidious films, the Lamberts aren’t the only characters that can lead a movie in this franchise. Insidious: Out of the Further may just be the start of a series of Insidious movies made without the presence of the Lamberts.
