Warning: Spoilers for Insidious: Out of the Further Over the last 15 years, the Insidious franchise has become one of the most popular and consistent in the entire horror genre. What began as a simple story regarding one family quickly turned into a franchise with a sprawling backstory centered around the place known as the Further. The newest entry in the series - Insidious: Out of the Further - dives even deeper into its universe's already rich lore. Unlike the previous films, which followed the continuation of the Lambert family story, Out of the Further cements itself as an independent movie. There are brand-new characters and villains, which gives the film a refreshing feel after years of Patrick Wilson leading the franchise. Out of the Further follows a young mom named Gemma, who, along with her daughter, lives in her childhood home. Gemma is haunted by her mom’s actions growing up, and a series of dreams makes her realize that she is now going through the same thing that her mom did. Gemma is entering the Further during her dreams, and not only that, but the evil entities in the realm are looking to use her to come back to the land of the living. The third act of the film is full of twists and turns, with the audience getting some answers as to what (and who) is targeting Gemma and her daughter. The final confrontation is both intense and terrifying, and includes the best villain that the Insidious franchise has ever had to offer. Gemma's Connection To The Further Explained Image via Sony Pictures Entertainment Insidious: Out of the Further begins with Gemma living her normal life. She works as a dental hygienist, and spends her days cleaning patients’ teeth before heading home to her daughter. As Gemma is a single mother, the two have a close relationship with one another, and it’s this bond that is the beating heart of the film’s story. Gemma quickly begins to realize that things aren’t quite right, however. She begins to have disturbing visions (or dreams), with many centered around her own childhood and her relationship with her mother before she passed away. These dreams eventually escalate into full-blown terror, with one involving Gemma being trapped in a pillow fort with no way out. Gemma eventually seeks out help as these nightmares become more dangerous. She goes to an expert on the Further, who explains that Gemma has a special gift — she can travel to the Further, and not only that, she can bring things back with her as well. Franchise veteran Elise, who first appeared in the original Insidious, is there to help explain everything to her. Gemma’s connection to the Further is later explained to be generational. She once believed that her mom was suffering from some form of mental illness while she was growing up, but Gemma then realizes that her mom was actually being haunted by the same demons that continue to pester her in the present day. Gemma and her mom aren’t the only ones in the family connected to the Further; Gemma’s daughter also shares this gift, and is targeted by the evil spirits as a result of her powers. This then raises the stakes for the third act, as Gemma not only has to save herself, but must protect her daughter as well. Insidious: Out Of The Further's Lambert Family Cameo Explained As stated, the Lambert family are not the focus of Insidious: Out of the Further. Gemma and her family fill that role instead, which provides a breath of fresh air to the franchise. However, the remnants of the Lambert family’s own connection to the Further still loom large over the new story. During Gemma and Elise’s initial conversations, the latter explains that Gemma’s current struggles are a result of a ripple effect stemming from the Lambert’s actions. Elise says that the events of Insidious: The Red Door led to the Lambert’s “banishing” their demons for good. The Lambert’s doing so led to another door being opened in the Further, with another evil being unleashed. That evil is cult leader Cyrus Lee (more on him later). All of this is explained via abstract imagery, with some archival footage being shown from past Insidious movies. It’s a quick moment, but one that is sure to please longtime fans of the franchise. Elise's Insidious: Out Of The Further Role Explained Elise’s role is similar to the ones she had in previous Insidious films. She acts as a mentor to Gemma, explaining the Further to her. Again, it’s through Elise that Gemma is able to come to terms with her power and the true danger that both she and her daughter are in. Elise began the Insidious franchise as a living guide through the Further, but her death meant that she now spends her time in the realm of the dead. As a result, Gemma uses astral communication in order to speak with Elise. Gemma then spends face-to-face time with Elise when the two reunite in the Further during the film’s final battle. Ultimately, this means that Elise’s role in Out of the Further is relatively limited. However, she makes a big impact with the screen time she has, and is once again vital to the film’s story. How Gemma Defeats Cult Leader Cyrus Lee One of the most interesting elements of Insidious: Out of the Further is the presence of a brand-new villain. The last film in the franchise, The Red Door, was plagued with a relatively weak villain, which brought down the overall story. Out of the Further opts to change things in that regard, introducing a terrifying new villain with a captivating backstory. The main villain of Out of the Further is a man named Cyrus Lee, and Gemma learns about him through footage seen on TV and conversations with Elise. Lee is a former cult leader who, in life, gained a following for his devil-worshipping practices. Years ago, Lee killed himself in order to prove to his followers that he could return from the dead, and his tormenting of Gemma is a desperate attempt to make that happen. Does Out Of The Further's Post-Credits Scene Set Up More Insidious Movies? Image via Sony Pictures Entertainment Insidious: Out of the Further has only one post credits scene. The sequence shows Lee, who is now trapped forever in the Further, being tortured by the ghosts he promised to bring back to life. He’s in a dentist chair with his teeth being drilled into during the post-credits scene, and while this sequence may seem like a quick final scare, it also shows that Cyrus is still technically around, which means he may make a return at some point.
