Insidious 6 Officially Sets All-Time Rotten Tomatoes Record With Debut Score

Blumhouse's hit horror franchise is back with Insidious: Out of the Further, and critics are fairly impressed with the new installment. Led by The Haunting of Bly Manor's Amelia Eva, the 2026 film revolves around single mother Gemma who, plagued by nightmares after moving into her childhood home, discovers she actually has the ability to traverse into The Further, much like Lin Shaye's Elise, Patrick Wilson's Josh and Ty Simpkins' Dalton from previous films. However, she also discovers she has the ability to bring spirits from the nightmarish realm into the real world, making for one of the most dangerous Insidious films yet. Now, as the film gears up for its August 21 release, the first reviews for Insidious: Out of the Further have begun rolling out, securing it a debut score on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, the new film holds a 67% approval rating on the review aggregate based on 36 reviews, netting it a "Rotten" rating, but also making it the best-reviewed installment in the horror franchise. Since its inception from James Wan and Leigh Whannell in 2011, the Insidious franchise has enjoyed a range of reviews from critics, though it has generally found itself on the Rotten side of the Rotten Tomatoes scale. Though some have appreciated its scares, others found them increasingly predictable as the series has gone on, and the plots similarly became more and more critiqued with each new installment. Even with its better Rotten Tomatoes score, though, when it comes to Insidious: Out of the Further's reviews, critics are still very split on their feelings about the sixth installment in the series. ScreenRant's own Josh Bate was largely negative in his 4/10 review of the film, awarding it some credit for flipping the formula on its head of bringing The Further out into the real world, but finding some of its scares as being routine and "silly": The continuous issues regarding the film’s scares and its main characters are especially noticeable in the first two thirds. Much of the first half of the movie, in particular, consists of one dreamlike sequence after another, with Gemma continually meeting spirits (or followers of the main villain). In a day and age when horror films are more intelligent and innovative than ever, these set-piece scenes fail to impress. There’s only so many times the audience can see the same character trapped in a dark environment with evil spirits around her before it becomes dull, and Out of the Further falls into that trap continuously. While far from a sharp turnaround, Insidious: Out of the Further's Rotten Tomatoes debut does help establish it as one of the better-reviewed films from the horror franchise, as well as breaks the franchise's 13-year-streak of landing on the Rotten side of the scale. In spite of the last two films' lackluster reviews, they raised the bar higher for the franchise's all-time box office record, with The Red Door currently holding the record with over $189 million grossed worldwide. As such, a higher string of reviews by comparison could help secure another massive box office haul for the film.
