Insidious 6 Box Office Earns Horror Franchise's Lowest Debut In 11 Years

The movie, which debuted on August 21, is the sixth installment in the Blumhouse horror franchise, which kicked off in 2010 with a smash hit directed by James Wan (who returned to helm the second installment) from a screenplay by Leigh Whannell (who wrote the next three installments and directed the third). 2026's Insidious: Out of the Further, which was written and directed by Jacob Chase (Come Play), follows spectral medium Elise (Lin Shaye) aiding a young mother (Amelia Eve) who is being preyed upon by demons that realize she has the power to bring them into the human world. This sees the movie earning the fourth-best opening weekend of the six-film franchise with the lowest domestic debut since 2015's Insidious: Chapter 3 opened with $22.7 million. The movie is set to debut at No. 2 behind the fourth weekend of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, though this is a less unusual occurrence for the franchise. Only the second and fifth installments debuted at No. 1, and the only other installment to debut at No. 2 was the fourth. The original movie opened at No. 3, as did the third movie. In addition to Insidious: Out of the Further reviews earning it a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 60% that makes it the second highest-reviewed installment of the franchise, it is already on track to turn a solid profit. The reported budget of the new movie is just $18 million, which likely places its estimated break-even point somewhere around $45 million. Considering the fact that every single Insidious movie, even the two that had lower debuts, has grossed more than $100 million, it seems entirely likely that Out of the Further will follow in their footsteps and earn more than double that benchmark. Additionally, even though it was bested by Spider-Man: Brand New Day this weekend, Insidious 6 is a Sony release just like Spider-Man, so its placement at No. 2 gives Sony the Top 2 domestic titles this weekend. Sony hasn't managed that feat at any other point over the past two years. Ultimately, Insidious: Out of the Further seems set to become another hit for the low-budget horror franchise. It should be able to turn a profit to such a degree that another installment is greenlit in spite of the fact that the franchise has hit a new low for the past decade. This could either come in the form of Insidious 7 or progress on the spinoff Thread: An Insidious Tale, which was announced in 2022 and had writer-director Jeremy Slater attached alongside stars Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani as of 2023, but has still not come to fruition.
