Today, we celebrate a rather curious national holiday. We are commemorating the supposedly nationalist declaration of independence from Spain even when, that same year, Spain handed us over to the United States. We are also remembering a historical event tainted with factionalism during a period when we were only beginning to imagine the Philippine nation.
