‘Ink’ trailer: Danny Boyle chronicles Rupert Murdoch’s rise and the birth of The Sun

Jack O’Connell stars as editor Larry Lamb, with Guy Pearce playing the young Murdoch and Claire Foy portraying Jules Davies, a fictional journalist created as a composite of women who worked on Fleet Street at the time.Set in London in 1969, the film follows Murdoch as he recruits Lamb to relaunch The Sun and compete with the hugely successful Daily Mirror. The trailer shows Lamb assembling a newsroom around a new philosophy of newspaper publishing, asking what readers actually want before pushing the paper towards stories about television, crime, sport and sex.The film is adapted from James Graham’s Tony and Olivier Award-winning stage play, with Graham also writing the screenplay. The story traces the partnership between Murdoch and Lamb as they attempt to turn a failing paper into a tabloid powerhouse, with the consequences of their approach extending into the wider history of modern media.The trailer gives particular prominence to O’Connell’s Lamb, whose aggressive editorial instincts drive the paper’s transformation, while Pearce’s Murdoch is presented as a young businessman fascinated by the possibilities of the venture. Foy’s Jules operates within the overwhelmingly male Fleet Street newsroom while pushing her own ideas about what the paper should cover.Ink opened the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2026. Boyle directs following 28 Years Later, with Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting and Steve Jobs among his previous films.Ink will open in select US theatres on December 11, 2026, before streaming on Netflix from January 8, 2027.
