Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional Rs 300 crore to IIT Kanpur's medical school project. The matching grant aims to draw wider donor support for its hospital, cancer centre and interdisciplinary healthcare plans.IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has committed another Rs 300 crore towards the development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, taking his total contribution to the project to Rs 400 crore.Gangwal had donated Rs 100 crore to IIT Kanpur in 2022 to support its plans to establish a medical school on campus. His latest commitment comes with a matching-grant component under which he will match contributions from other supporters by up to Rs 300 crore.The move is pointed at involving more alumni, philanthropists and other donors into IIT Kanpur's medical sciences project, which seeks to combine medical education and research with engineering and technology.“It is an honour and a privilege to be part of this innovative and first-of-its-kind medical institution," Gangwal said. WHAT IIT KANPUR PLANS TO BUILDThe institute's plans include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus and a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre.The facilities are intended to support medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery. IIT Kanpur also wants the school to provide a setting where doctors, engineers, researchers and technology experts can work together on areas such as medical technology, diagnostics and clinical innovation. The medical school marks a move beyond IIT Kanpur's traditional focus on engineering and technology. The institute has said it wants to use its existing strengths in research and engineering to address challenges in healthcare.Prof Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said Gangwal's first contribution had helped the institute set its medical school plans in motion.“Recognising the potential of interdisciplinary research and innovation in engineering technology and medicine to transform healthcare delivery across India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur ventured into establishing a medical school,” Agrawal said.He said the latest contribution would help the institute move towards realising the project sooner.WHY THE MATCHING GRANT MATTERSGangwal's latest commitment is not limited to a direct contribution. His offer to match donations of up to Rs 300 crore is intended to encourage other supporters to contribute to the project.For IIT Kanpur, this could expand the pool of funding available for the medical school and its planned healthcare infrastructure. A contribution from another donor could effectively be matched by Gangwal under the scheme, increasing the resources available for the project.The institute is now looking to its alumni, philanthropists and other supporters to participate in the fundraising effort.The initiative also reflects a wider shift among India's leading technical institutions towards healthcare and biomedical research.
