India's 80th Independence Day draws global greetings and diaspora celebrations

From the Pacific islands and East Asia to Europe, the Gulf and the Americas, members of the Indian community joined the celebrations with friends and families.Indian missions also marked the day through the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ campaign, under which the Tricolour was hoisted successively from east to west across the world, from Fiji to San Francisco. The celebrations were held alongside traditional flag hoisting ceremonies at missions, including in London, where the High Commission of India observed the occasion with the global relay.Among the messages from abroad, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio greeted the people of India on its 80th Independence Day and said bilateral ties were “stronger than ever” because of the personal relationship between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India’s other global partners, including the UK, France, Russia and Iran, also extended greetings and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and regional cooperation.Russian President Vladimir Putin greeted President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi, expressing confidence that the constructive bilateral partnership would help enhance international security and stability. In Singapore, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam said the two countries share a robust and forward-looking Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that is underpinned by close people-to-people ties. Israeli President Isaac Herzog also congratulated India and called for strengthening the “beautiful friendship” between the two countries. Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah extended greetings and best wishes to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India on the occasion. In the US, Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the Foundation of Indian Americans New England for its Independence Day event in Boston, where Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey issued a special proclamation declaring August 15, 2026, as “India Day” in the state.The day was marked by celebrations among Indians overseas and by messages from partner countries, with the Tricolour being raised across missions worldwide under the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ campaign and leaders from several nations sending their greetings on India’s 80th Independence Day.
