Indiana Jones Meets Firefly In Disney+'s 132-Minute Sci-Fi Movie

While The Mandalorian and Grogu isn't currently streaming on Disney+, it's expected to premiere on the streaming service sometime in September. Additionally, the movie is now available to buy or rent on digital, and it will be released on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on August 25, and there's plenty of reason to be excited about its release. One of the biggest reasons to get excited is The Mandalorian and Grogu's similarities to Firefly and Indiana Jones. The Mandalorian and Grogu Perfectly Recaptures Firefly's Space Western Genre The Mandalorian and Grogu's similarities to Firefly are the easiest to see. Both Joss Whedon's show and Jon Favreau's movie are some of the most notable examples of the space Western subgenre of sci-fi ever made, for example. Both stories follow ragtag mercenaries going from planet to planet in their spaceship while taking on dangerous missions. They're even similar in the real world: Firefly got a sequel movie in Serenity, while The Mandalorian and Grogu is obviously a sequel to The Mandalorian. While much of it happens in The Mandalorian show, Din Djarin is also very similar to Mal Reynolds, in that they try to position themselves as cold-blooded criminals only to reveal that they have hearts of gold. They also both find strange and powerful young people who possess unfathomable powers — Grogu with the Force and River with her psychic abilities — that they take onto their ship and their found families. Most importantly, The Mandalorian and Grogu also perfectly recreates the feel of watching Firefly. The space Western is such a unique genre, but both of them nail it completely. Din and Grogu's various misadventures and blaster fights feel very reminiscent of Firefly's many missions and fights in the best way possible. Both of their worlds are also equally grimy and morally complex, and they combine the highs of speculative sci-fi with the lows of gritty Westerns. If you liked Firefly, you're going to like The Mandalorian and Grogu. The Mandalorian Movie Is Also An Exciting Adventure Like Indiana Jones While it's not as obvious, The Mandalorian and Grogu also has quite a few similarities to Indiana Jones. There are no ancient treasures to unearth or Nazis to punch, but Din and Grogu go on the same pulse-pounding adventures Indy does. Their mission, to hunt down Imperial remnants and help bring order to the New Republic, is exactly the kind of adventure that viewers can get behind, just as Indiana Jones' search for relics and goal of thwarting the Nazis was. The Mandalorian and Grogu also has speeder chases through busy city streets, pivotal starship battles from air, and huge gun and fistfights to delight audiences the same way Harrison Ford has for decades. The Mandalorian and Grogu really has everything an Indiana Jones fan could want out of a new movie. There are roaring adventures, massive fights, interesting lore, easy-to-hate villains, and plenty of new and interesting locations for the heroes to explore.
