His disappearance triggered a search operation involving local authorities after he failed to return as planned and stopped communicating with his family.Authorities later recovered his body from the Big Pine Lakes area on August 3. Officials have not disclosed how he entered the water, and investigators have said there is currently no indication of foul play. The incident remains under investigation.SEARCH BEGAN AFTER FAMILY LOST CONTACTAccording to a Reddit post by Mubayi's sibling, he last spoke with his family at around 8:30 pm on August 1 while hiking in the Big Pine Lakes area. During the conversation, he shared his GPS coordinates before communication stopped. When he did not return as expected, his family reported him missing to the Inyo County Sheriff's Office, prompting an extensive search involving Inyo County Search and Rescue volunteers.According to his UCSB profile, Mubayi was pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering after earning a bachelor's degree in the same field from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022. His academic work focused on sustainable technologies. As per his LinkedIn profile, he was researching bacteria and biological processes capable of breaking down plant waste and plastics to develop environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based materials. He also served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering courses during his time at UCSB.He was born and raised in Hong Kong and was regarded as a "fairly experienced hiker".A self-written biography published by Illini 4000, a student-led non-profit organisation he was involved with during his undergraduate years, described him as someone who loved sports and enjoyed spending time outdoors.His family had shared details of his planned hiking route on social media while search efforts were underway, hoping someone who had crossed paths with him would come forward.
