New Delhi,Oct 23, 2026 08:25 ISTAn Indian-origin nurse and mother of an eight-month-old baby was found burned and buried in California, days after her husband told police that US immigration agents had taken her away from their home while she was collecting the mail. Her husband, Gurinder Gill, 28, has now been charged with her murder. The 30-year-old victim, Jasmine Gill, was reported missing by her cousin on October 4, four days after she was last seen. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, she and her husband were going through a divorce and a child custody dispute when she disappeared. As investigators searched for Jasmine, Gurinder told the police that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had arrested her outside their Sacramento home. However, when detectives contacted the agency to verify his account, they were told that no enforcement activity had taken place at the residence."As the investigation progressed, Sacramento County Sheriff's Office detectives identified several inconsistencies in Gurinder's statements about his wife's disappearance," Sergeant Edward Igoe, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said in a statement. The investigation took a grim turn on October 1, when authorities discovered burned and buried human remains in neighbouring El Dorado County, about 70 miles from the couple's home. The remains were later identified as those of Jasmine.Deputies arrested Gurinder on October 14 and carried out search warrants at two homes associated with him. He is being held without bail.Jasmine Gill became a registered nurse to follow in her mom's footsteps and had an 8-month-old. She was born in India, where her mother still lives, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up to support the family. The fundraiser aims to help bring her remains back to her mother and support her eight-month-old son. Supporters have raised more than $21,000 to help return her remains to her mother and support her son."She was fighting for a better future for herself and her baby," the campaign said, adding that Jasmine had been seeking a divorce and a fresh start for herself and her child."Tragically, before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect," it added.- Ends
