This quest, which was added as part of The Witcher 3's next-gen update in December 2022, rewards the Forgotten Wolf School armor diagrams, which are modeled after the armor worn by Geralt in the Netflix series. Here's how to reach every "In the Eternal Fire's Shadow" ending in The Witcher 3 and collect the Forgotten Wolf schematics. [Ed. note: This guide contains spoilers for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so continue at your own risk!] How to start 'In the Eternal Fire's Shadow' in The Witcher 3 To start "In the Eternal Fire's Shadow," go to The Devil's Pit in the center of the Velen region. It's south of Novigrad, and southwest of Oxenfurt. Speak with the Eternal Fire Deacon and agree to help him. Make your way down, then head into the caves through the northwest exit. It's the double door marked with strange white symbols. Graphic: Marloes Valentina Stella/Polygon | Source image: CD Projekt Red via Polygon Search the cave 'In the Eternal Fire's Shadow' The caves are littered with loot, so feel free to collect everything before freeing the mysterious person at the bottom of the pit. You won't be able to loot the caves once the quest has ended. Besides the loot, you can search the caves for clues. The clues include several corpses, Witcher symbols, and a total of five notes left by a man called Reinald. If you've previously completed Keira Metz' quests, you can use her magic lamp to spot some ghosts. All of this is optional, but if you thoroughly investigate the caves, you will unlock additional dialogue lines and a potion recipe to make the upcoming boss battle easier. While you're investigating The Devil's Pit, a mysterious voice will urge you to save him. Whenever he tells you not to go somewhere, do the opposite to gather extra information. So, when the path splits in two and the mysterious voice urges you to go right, go left to gather more clues. Graphic: Marloes Valentina Stella/Polygon | Source image: CD Projekt Red via Polygon How to craft Reinald's Philter in 'In the Eternal Fire's Shadow' The most important clues are found at the alchemy station, where you should read the priest's testament, and in the reddish shack in the large room with the plague victims' ghosts, where you should find the recipe and ingredients to craft Reinald's Philter. Graphic: Marloes Valentina Stella/Polygon | Source image: CD Projekt Red via Polygon Once you've found most of the clues in "In the Eternal Fire's Shadow," you get two optional objectives. First, you can read about the Red Miasmal in Geralt's bestiary to learn the best ways to defeat it. Secondly, you can craft Reinald's Philter, a potion that should make the fight against the Red Miasmal easier. To craft Reinald's Philter, open the alchemy menu, scroll down to "quests", and craft the potion. How to free Reinald in 'In the Eternal Fire's Shadow' At the end of The Devil's Pit, you'll find a large arena with a mysterious figure trapped in the stones, claiming to be Reinald. To free him from his stalagmite prison, use the Aard sign (telekinetic blast). The rescue mission isn't over yet; the mysterious figure is indeed Reinald, but he's possessed by the Red Miasmal. As explained in the Red Miasmal's bestiary entry, there are three ways to get the upper hand in battle: Apply specter oil to your weapon. Use the Yrden and Aard signs to trap the specter and expel it from the host's body. Consume Reinald's Philter. Reinald (or rather, the Red Miasmal) will ask you to give him Reinald's Philter, but unless you want to make the battle harder than it needs to be, do not give Reinald the potion. Geralt should consume it himself. Graphic: Marloes Valentina Stella/Polygon | Source image: CD Projekt Red via Polygon The Reinald boss fight consists of two phases. First, you must defeat Possessed Reinald. He constantly uses his Quen shield, so don't waste stamina by attacking him while the shield is up. To easily expel the Red Miasmal from Reinald's body, use the Yrden sign to trap it, then use Aard to blast it. Image: CD Projekt Red via Polygon During the second phase of the boss battle, you must defeat the Red Miasmal in its non-human form. Beware that the Red Miasmal can teleport and summon minions. It also uses a fairly powerful ranged attack, so be ready to dodge this attack whenever the Red Miasmal teleports away. 'In the Eternal Fire's Shadow' quest outcomes After the fight, Reinald asks you to bring the priest to him. You can do as he asks, or refuse. Here's what happens. Image: CD Projekt Red via Polygon "Fine, I'll get the priest." Reinald and the priest meet at the bottom of The Devil's Pit. Whether the priest survives or not depends on your next dialogue choices. "No. Not worth the risk." Geralt and Reinald argue for a bit, but Reinald concedes, and Geralt burns his body. The priest won't meet Reinald. If you didn't bring the priest to Reinald, you'll return to the priest outside. You can either tell him what truly happened in The Devil's Pit, or say that the details don't matter. This choice doesn't change much; the priest won't believe you even if you speak of the Eternal Fire cult's crimes. If you did bring the priest to Reinald, you can reach two quest outcomes. In the good outcome, the priest not only survives but leaves the Eternal Fire and founds a hospital in The Devil's Pit. Reinald's ghost finds peace. In the bad outcome, Reinald murders the priest, does not find peace, and The Devil's Pit becomes haunted by ghouls. There are various ways to arrive at the good outcome in this Witcher 3 quest, as long as you've made a strong enough case for the priest. Two dialogue lines in favor of the priest should do the trick, but try to pick more, just to be sure. Graphic: Marloes Valentina Stella/Polygon | Source image: CD Projekt Red via Polygon With that in mind, here's what to say: To reach the good outcome (the priest lives): Say "Boy's innocent" and "Don't need a church to do good, priest." This should suffice, but if you've unlocked them, the optional lines also count as "positive" remarks: "Found a priest who sacrificed his life" and "What would you do, Reinald?" To reach the bad outcome (the priest dies): Be critical of the priest. Say: "Reinald's right" and "Crimes like these can't be forgiven," which guarantees a murdered priest. As an "In the Eternal Fire's Shadow" quest reward, no matter the ending, you'll receive all Forgotten Wolven armor and weapon diagrams. Complete the "Scavenger Hunt: Forgotten Wolf School Gear Diagrams" treasure hunt to craft the new set.
