Immigration detention facility construction paused

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A federal court in California issued a preliminary injunction keeping the federal government from building an immigration detention facility in Gilroy. Santa Clara County and the state challenged its construction on the grounds that the government refused to properly consider the project’s environmental; the proposed site is on land previously used for agricultural research purposes and houses significant amounts of hazardous waste.
