Imagination Talks Up Their Open-Source Vulkan Driver, Volcanic Architecture Plans

Imagination Tech was at XDC 2026 Toronto this week to talk up their ongoing work around their PowerVR Mesa Vulkan driver (and PVR upstream DRM kernel driver) with this driver continuing to improve, plans for supporting their new Volcanic GPU architecture, and other improvements. Compared to years ago when many in the Linux/open-source world longed for PowerVR open-source driver support, it's been a reality the past few years with the PVR kernel driver and Mesa Vulkan drivers (plus Zink for OpenGL) coming together rather nicely for their recent GPU IP. The PowerVR Vulkan driver has reached formal Vulkan 1.2 conformance in the past year, there is a lot of kernel driver bug fixing that has taken place over the past year, and a lot more Vulkan features have been enabled. Thanks to leveraging Zink, OpenGL ES 2.0 has been working since Mesa 26.1 and OpenGL ES 3.1 will hopefully be ready for Mesa 26.3. Some other milestones this year include Continuous Integration (CI) testing now happening for the PowerVR code, Imagination published a full-featured PVRTune software package to replace their public "Lite" version, and GPU support is working on the BeagleV-Ahead board out of the box. There is also experimental RISC-V VisionFive 2 board support. Moving forward the Imagination engineers are planning to continue work toward Vulkan 1.3 and Vulkan 1.4 with their driver. They are also engaging lots around supporting the new Imagination Volcanic architecture IP.
