I wouldn't call myself a minimalist by any means, but I am not someone who buys a lot of kitchen gadgets or rushes to snag the latest seasonal cup. But ever since I picked up my first Fellow Carter Move Mug five years ago, I’ve happily repurchased it several times. This sleek little mug, designed by the coffee nerds at Fellow, keeps your brew hot (or cold) without sacrificing flavor. I use it so often that I’ve sung its praises to a coffee shop owner in Washington, a bed-and-breakfast proprietor in Maine, and countless other strangers.I love this mug more than I can express—so much, in fact, that I reached out to Fellow founder, Jake Miller, to chat about it. He launched the brand 13 years ago with the goal of delivering great design to coffee brewing, but customers kept asking for an exceptional way to drink their coffee on the go. So a company founded by and for coffee obsessives made the ultimate companion container. The Carter Move Mug is designed with a superior drinking experience in mind. The body of the mug tapers into a thin drinking lip that Miller said was inspired by a wine glass. When you take a sip, you’re touching metal and not paint, and the lip is protected when the mug is closed.Fellow Carter Move 16 Oz.At the time, other to-go cups were designed with a small opening in the lid and completely missed out on the aromatics. “It was a pretty opinionated design choice, but we wanted people to experience the incredible smells of coffee,” he explained. “Once the lid is off, you have this really great drinking experience.” While the lip of the mug is metal, the inside of the mug is ceramic-coated, so it doesn’t impart any taste to the coffee. According to Miller, “that allows for a more pure expression of the coffee.”When I tell people about the Carter Mug, I like to joke that it’s almost too good at its job. Hot drinks stay very hot for hours, and I regularly find ice in the mug a full day after I first made my chilled version. I once left a mug of hot coffee in a car during a blizzard, and after almost a day, the coffee was still pleasant to drink. Miller said this effective temperature control is from two things: the distance between the two walls and how much vacuum insulation the mug has. Also, Fellow designed the lid to be gasket-tight so there’s minimal heat loss. One of my favorite features of the Move Mug is the splash guard that clicks into the vessel and prevents big spills while you’re drinking in motion. (As a person prone to mess, this is very helpful.) This element, along with some other accessories, was born out of feedback based on how customers use their mugs, including a straw for cold coffee, a cup holder-friendly size, and the option for a slide top lid. “Everything we do is customer-driven,” Miller noted.Maybe not important to how your coffee tastes — but important to aesthetics — the Move Mug is sleek and sophisticated, which means it’s suitable for most situations. There’s a nice range of colors, and it looks great in my hand on my commute and on my desk in the office. It’s truly the perfect accessory.More Coffee Connoisseur PicksYour Coffee Will Be Better If You Buy the Right GrinderThe 12 Coffee Subscriptions We Keep Reordering15 Coffee Gifts That Are Sure to Impress
