While such pieces have a place in every wardrobe, there are so many other great ways to add some cosiness to your transitional outfits without relying solely on adding bulky layers. With that in mind, we've rounded up the must-buy pieces that will take you into the coming cooler months without having to compromise on style. 1. The wool giletMark our words, these sustainable wool gilets will be everywhere in a few months. They are the perfect sleek layer that add warmth without bulk. This cream fringe style is certain to be a best seller, but we also have our eyes on the gorgeous tartan designs – perfect for when you want to add a pop of colour. Wear yours under a trench coat with tailored black trousers for the office, or over a slouchy knit jumper for days of cosy countryside staycations. 2.The short-sleeved knitA short sleeve jumper is an essential for any transitional wardrobe. The It-girls at the recent Copenhagen Fashion Week wore theirs with white long-sleeve tops underneath, but they also look great on their own with a kilt skirt and chunky boots. 3. The square scarfIt's not quite cold enough yet for chunky knitted scarves but when you want something to protect against cool winds, this chic satin-effect style can be looped around your neck to add a pop of colour and a little extra warmth. The slip skirt Just because it's autumn, doesn't mean we have to ditch all of our colourful clothing in favour of drab greys. This 100% silk skirt is perfect for summer garden parties but would also look beyond chic paired with a slouchy roll neck jumper and a classic Barbour jacket as the days cool down. 5. The wool blazer Too cold to forego the outerwear, but not quite cold enough to layer up with a thick coat? Let us introduce you to the perfect hybrid style: the wool blazer. The lace-up bootsBiker boots have long been a firm favourite for autumnal styling but we're falling out of love with them this season. Instead of chunky boyish footwear, this year it's all about sleek silhouettes. We love these flat-soled lace-up shoes from Asos – they'll look great peeking out the bottom from a pair of turn-up jeans or even with your favourite maxi dress.
